When I lived at home I sorted all the laundry and did whites separately in hot water. Back then I washed with the boxed Tide and added a cup of bleach. In warm weather I hung all the laundry out. A female relative asked how I got our whites so white, because I knew she washed everything together—darks, lights and whites and towels—it didn’t matter. I was proud that as a high school girl she was asking my advice. 🙂
Later when I had my first baby I was going to be economical and used cloth diapers. I had my method for those too and always had white diapers.
Now my hisband wears colored underwear so I don’t have enough whites to do a full load so anything white gets washed in with lights. We are on our own well and I think the quality of the water makes a difference as I’ve noticed it’s not as good as other places we’ve lived (iron, etc.). We do have a whole house softener.

We have a big jug of TIDE ADVANCED POWER With Bleach Alternativewhich is supposed to 'contain extra whitening power for whites and colors.".
I suspect the secret ingredient is an Oxi-Clean-type of cleaning agent.

Most of the products that are 'oxi' cleaners or 'oxi' detergent contain a compound called sodium percarbonate. It's available to buy in pure form...a pure powder that can be added to regular detergent.

I add Oxycleanto my Tide pods and hot water. The whites get as white, or whiter then when I use Clorox bleach.
