I know, another mattress thread.  I wondered if anyone has one of these mattresses?  They are advertised as good for people who suffer from allergies and are made from latex, cotton and/or wool.  They are similar to the mattresses we had 30 years ago.  I think they are even the old-fashioned size, not the gigantically thick ones we have now.

I almost bought one ten years ago, but was put off by the price and settled for a Serta that is so heavy I can barely make it up and takes two people to turn, and can't be flipped.  Now it's time to get a new set and I'm looking at them again.

I bought 3 full mattresses a couple of years ago. Serta, Sealy, Simmons, etc. were all sold to hedge-funds and investor-types. That's the reason why they're not made well and are uncomfortable. They put lots of foam on top, which eventually sinks in the center - and people fall in the center or on the sides.

Don't fall for those long warranties --- these companies never honor them. When dealing with  mattress stores, they tell u to contact the manufacturers - who gives u the run-around.

I bought Englander mattresses (3 for my spare rooms) with little foam - $400 each.

You can google mattresses - Serta mattresses and other brands. and read thousands of complaints.

My suggestion is to order from Costco.com (they will take it back after 30 days) or go to ur local Mattress Store (google the store's name on-line and Yelp to read reviews). Have the owner or manager help u - not a salesperson who won't be around in 6 months. They'll explain the differences in mattresses, price, etc. once u tell them what ur interested in buying. You can then lay down on the mattress. That's what I did. I called ahead and got the manager's name and made an appt to go to the store. Things worked out perfectly. I also got free delivery, no tax, free bed-frames, and they took my 3 older mattresses away.

You can also google Royal Pedic Mattresses and read the reviews.

I did my homework and I'm happy with my purchase.

In the past, I had an average priced Sealy Queen Mattress for 29 years -- it was perfect and comfortable.

When I moved to my new home 15 yrs ago, I decided to get another brand new mattress, which is Simmons. Still perfect.

I don't think they're made as well now.

@kivah  Thanks for the info.  It helps explain why I had a Simmons mattress years ago that lasted 30 years, and now 10 years is lucky.  I will definitely check Costco.

I would NEVER buy a one-sided mattress. Yes, folks still make the two-sided ones that were made that way for a reason for hundred years. The hotel industry doesn't buy the one sided for a reason too.

I have a king sized mattress that can't be turned, so I "spin" it. It's on a slat platform, and since king sized mattresses are almost square, I pick up one corner of the mattress and slide it to the next corner of the bed frame.

This does help to prevent pressure spots in the foam.

As far as I know, mattresses have ALWAYS been dicey purchases, because since the era of the "straw tick" mattress "guarantees/warranties" have ALWAYS had wiggle words in teeny tiny print.

After learning my lesson about mattresses a very hard way, I "compose" mattresses using a firm foam platform, 3" gel foam topper, and Cuddle Ewe on top. Works like a charm for me.

@athenian

I also suggest u call Costco and ask for someone who could recommend a mattress set to u. You can also email. When I wanted to buy a large flat screen tv, I emailed Costco and the guy recommended Samsung, which I purchased.

Thanks to all for the info.  I will never buy another mattress that can't be flipped, or is so heavy.

I will call Costco and get suggestions.
