Some of you that sew might have experience in this.

I see sheet sets that I like but they don't offer a duvet cover in that design.

I am wondering if I bought 2 sheet sets and had the flat sheets sewn together on 3 sides, would they fit a duvet cover in the same size as the sheet sets?

Like, if I buy 2 twin sheet sets and the flat sheets are sewn together, would they fit a twin size duvet?

Or are duvets larger than flat sheets?

Kind of confusing.Hope I'm clear.

Re: About Sheet Sets and Duvets

@c_la_veeI'm sure you can.  Did you try Googling a how to?

One caveat -  if you're not going to sew it yourself, be sure to ask whoever will actually sew it, what they will charge.  I read the instructions on Google and it doesn't look that tough to do, but I do recall making my own drapes and jut handling all that much fabric can be a pain.

Re: About Sheet Sets and Duvets

Generally comforters and duvet covers are oversized and so you'd need to go up on the sheet size. For example buy king sized sheets for a queen comforter. But those Northern Nights sheets are really oversized so they might work. Measure your comforter and see.

@millieshops

Thank you! I was going to have them made but now that you mention, I could give it a try.

Time is always the big issue for me but there is the satisfaction of making something yourself.

How you must feel looking at the curtains you made.

In the meantime, I found a blog that shows the process very well, Pretty Prudent's DIY Duvet Cover Tutorial.

They made the nicest duvet cover for a little girl.

It looks like twin flat sheets would be wide enough to make a twin duvet!

@jaxs mom

I was wondering about that. I don't have any flat sheets to compare to a duvet as we don't use flat sheetss.

Looks like I will have to buy a duvet for that particular bed first, then meausure it before buying the sheets,  just to make sure.

Thank you!

Re: About Sheet Sets and Duvets

OH OH!! I"ve done this!!!

Well, my MIL has for me. There was a pattern (color) I loved in the sheets but there was no comforter or duvet as the sheets were on clearance. I have a king size down comforter on my queen size bed. MIL said to purchase the California king sheets; there is a good 1-2 inch bit of fabric overhanging where the double stitching was done. She added button closures at one end.

To look at it, you would think it was from a high-end department store. Heavy weight linen sheets, washed in hot water and placed in the dryer first,  then she did what she does.

Beautiful.

Re: About Sheet Sets and Duvets

Just my experience but usually flat sheets are about the same width as the comforter, longer but not wider so there really wouldn't be any extra fabric to sew the side seams up.

I would go up to the next size and you are sure there is enough fabric for the seams.

Re: About Sheet Sets and Duvets

I did that with sheets years ago.  Left one side open but did but added buttons and button holes on that side (the one you slid the comforter in and then close).  My comforter was a goose down one.  Fit in nicely and the little bit of extra added some oomph and puffiness to the look of the bed.  I made lined drapes to match.  It was a Ralph Lauren floral.  The bedroom was beautiful.  As I said though - years (28 - 30) ago.

Re: About Sheet Sets and Duvets

Yes! I've made several duvet covers. It's like sewing up a giant pillow case and you can decide if you want any type of closures on the open side; I used velcro strips.

Back in the olden days when you could buy bedding separates I'd buy two flat sheets to make the duvet cover. Then I'd buy the matching pillow cases. Now you'd have to buy two sets to get the two flat sheets which adds onto the cost.

Measure your duvet and buy sheets that when sewn together will acomodate that size. A queen size duvet is usually 86" x 86". However, the Company Store duvets have different measurements (which is why I no longer buy that type of bedding from them).

And @aggravated - I too made a lovely, ruffled duvet cover from some Ralph Lauren floral sheets that I found on sale for about $15 a piece! I still us it and the pillow cases. The quality was outstanding all those years ago.
