I don't know whom to ask, so I thought someone here might have a roofer in the family. I had a few shingles where a nail popped up. When a friend went up to look at it and nail it back down, he said the wood under it was soft. My roof is only 1 layer thick and is about 15 yrs old. I got an estimate for a replacement and it was going to be $10,000 for a roof to be put over this one or $14,000 to have it torn off and a new roof put on. What I am wondering is if the wood is soft or bad and I put a new roof on top of the existing one, is it like putting good money for nothing because the wood will be rotting away underneath, or will it be ok because it will keep water from making it worse. I can't tell if the roofer I called is just trying to get me to pay more money unnecessarily. Thanks for your help.
