Replacing Porcelain Tile with Luxury Vinyl

I have porcelain tile in my kitchen which has been down forever and would like to replace it with luxury vinyl.  Has anyone done this and need advice about where to purchase and have installed. I'm assuming tile will have to be removed and I'm not sure how big a job that is and the cost.  Have you used stores like Lowes or Home Depot or a specialty floor covering store?

Re: Replacing Porcelain Tile with Luxury Vinyl

Hi @patticakes we did this in our kitchen, one bathroom and a major change in our 30x58' family room, we did this over a 5 year period. We go to a specialty flooring shop when we have this type of job done, we know the owners well and appreciate their expertise. The shop asked if there was something in particular we wanted and then send a man to our house with samples of the flooring type we had selected so that we could choose a design, etc. Our house is mostly hardwood floors so it was a big change for us. The salesman went over all the different product features and the process for removal, prep and install. We've used the same shop and installer several times.

Re: Replacing Porcelain Tile with Luxury Vinyl

I bought a condo in 2018 and updated all the floors.  I had luxury vinyl tile replace the old carpeting that was there.  It's in my whole house.

Last year, I replaced white porcelain tile in my sun room with the same  tile.  They were able to put the tile right over the white porcelain tile.  No need to dig up the tile.

Home Depot did it and I have no complaints.

Re: Replacing Porcelain Tile with Luxury Vinyl

Thanks hick and we rescue cats for the helpful info.  I guess I should have mentioned that we, too, have hardwood in the rest of our house.  So, we're looking for something other than a wood-look.  We would be doing our rather large kitchen, pantry and laundry room.

@patticakes   I have LVT throughout my entire condo.   I love it.   I love the ease of care and durability.   Wood floors are beautiful but you have to be very careful with scratching and scuffing.  I had wood floors in my previous home. They were dark and when i got tired of the dark floor  and wanted to lighten the floors the sanding and curing was a nightmare and very expensive.

We used a flooring company.  Too many people I know have had too many problems with Home Depot or Lowes in our area.

In general, you can put vinyl plank flooring right over tile that's in good shape. Removing tile is not a fun job and will add substantially to the cost if you go that route.

There really is no such thing as luxury vinyl. It should be called most expensive vinyl. We chose teak wood throughout in our home. It looks as good as the day it was installed (10 ago).

Re: Replacing Porcelain Tile with Luxury Vinyl

Just a note, we DO have Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring in our family room, so while in some opinions there may not be luxury vinyl that is not the case. Perhaps not on a roll, but I know what I paid for the plank vinyl flooring and it was very expensive.

Re: Replacing Porcelain Tile with Luxury Vinyl

We downsized three years ago into an attached villa and had to renovate the whole thing.  We removed the carpet and installed LVP or luxury vinyl plank. It was quite expensive, but the best option for us.  I have had three knee surgeries and tile flooring just kills my legs if I have to stand or walk on it very long.  Plus I don't want to deal with cleaning grout.  Our floor looks fabulous and it is easy to clean.  In Florida, LVP is what I see in most houses that have been recently renovated.  We had tile in our kitchen.  I couldn't put the LVP over the tile because it made the doorway into the main room uneven.  Otherwise I would have and it would saved me a lot of money.  We purchased our product from Lowe's but had a contractor we know and have previously used install the floor.
