I recently saw a segment on Cooks Country Kitchen when they were making an Apple cake.  Instead of cutting the apples in chunks they grated them.  Is it better to do this than just cutting the apple?  I want to make an Apple cake this week and was wondering if grating the apple makes a difference.

I would thing the grated apples would just cook down more. Kind of how Zucchini cooks down in zucchini bread. It would all depend on if you want actual chunks of soft apple or if you just want the flavor and moisture of grated apples.

Both sound yummy, nonetheless. :-)

I've made the cake both ways, and prefer to grate the apples, as I'm not a fan of small apple chunks in cake.   It doesn't affect the outcome of the cake, just personal preference.

It depends on what you're making and the texture you want.  I don't care for grated as I like to taste and feel a bit of apple.  I'd prefer finely diced but not too fine.

@Jessa9   DO BOTH!   I just made an apple cake this past weekend with apples and cinnamon that was delicious.  I find it's best to do both.   I cut 2 peeled apples in small chunks and then grated the 3rd.  It was so good.   Let us know how it turns out.

I prefer small chunks for apple cake or crisp and slices for pies.

Although I've never done it, I may try a combination of chunks and grated for an apple cake.  Example:  2 apples in chunks, 1 apple grated.

Hi everybody. I made the apple cake today and it called for 5 cups of diced apples.  I used 3 cups of diced and I grated the other 2 .   It came out pretty good
