Question about a self cleaning oven?

Does anybody know if it is ok to clean a self cleaning oven with oven cleaner instead. I'm very uncomfortable with the extremely high temps a oven reaches during a self cleaning procedure and I would rather spray it and was wondering if anybody has done this. My oven is getting older and I just don't trust it that hot for hours.
