Question Re: Bathtub refinishing

Has anyone had a bathtub refinished and would like to share their experience and which company they used? I'm looking to have a bathtub refinished. The process where it's cleaned and a spray finish is applied. Because of the configuration of the bathroom it would be a hassle to remove and replace the existing bathtub. The current bathtub is a white enamel finish. It just needs sprucing up.

Re: Question Re: Bathtub refinishing

I had it done many years ago in my apt- it might have changed since then but it's really toxic. Plus the edges chipped, especially by the drain. Not a good experience!

Hmmm, good to know, but disappointing. I have a bathtub that needs something and have been considering this option also. Anyone else with ideas or a positive experience? I don't like the idea of the liners.

Re: Question Re: Bathtub refinishing

Our fiberglass tub and shower pieces were set in place, and the house framed in around them, so I am quite familiar with how difficult it can be to remove built in fixtures in a remodel. We actually put off our bathroom remodels because we knew what a hassle it would be to remove those fiberglass pieces. Luckily, we found a company called WV Rebath that took care of this job for us, and almost made it look easy, despite the mess. Regardless of what is there now, I would replace it, and be content that you have something nice to last years and years. Whatever finish is used to spruce up what you have now, will not hold up long term, and the cost to keep repairing that will be more than the initial layout to replace the tub. With upgrades, I always vote to do it right, and do it once.

Re: Question Re: Bathtub refinishing

We had our bathroom on the second floor redone (everything but the sink). It's a very small room and we were wondering how the tub would be removed- how much damage to the floor and walls, how the big cast iron tub would be taken down the stairs let alone out the door!

No worries. We found a reputable contractor and they did a fantastic job with little mess and not a ding in the rest of the house! They actually broke the tub up into manageable pieces. So glad we didn't try to just cover the problem.

Whatever you decide to do, ask for referrals from the company. We used Angie's List. Worked well for us.

Re: Question Re: Bathtub refinishing

I manage over 100 rental units and all the tubs that have been sprayed have failed and peel and chip in a little over a year. Would not recommend. We now replace tubs rather than refinish.

Re: Question Re: Bathtub refinishing

We have had a tub and a sink in one of our bathrooms refinished about nine years ago and have been very happy with the results. We did have a little chipping around the sink drain at first. We had the company come back and redo that area. They did, at no cost, and has looked great since. I would just recommend that the company you choose stands behind their work.

Re: Question Re: Bathtub refinishing

I had Bathfitter come out probably 8 years ago and do a tub overlay and shower surround. What used to be there was truly a mess. I cannot believe what a wonderful job they did and how much I still love it. I would recommend them highly. I'm sure not everybody has had the same experience as mine, but for me I couldn't be happier!

Re: Question Re: Bathtub refinishing

We had ours refinished over a year ago. White. I looked on-line and there were plenty of local companies offering ""specials"". We were worried because we had the shower area above the tub newly retiled. The guy did a terrific job - the tub looks wonderful still with no chips or anything anyone here mentioned. No scrubbing with any cleaner that contains particles and pretty much only use scrubbing bubbles on it. He estimated that the refinish would last approximately five years. We were happy with it and still are!

Re: Question Re: Bathtub refinishing

Interesting to read these reviews. I've thought about refinishing one of our tubs.
