I had luxury vinyl plank floors put down last year.   LOVE!!!!   The installer said its the easiest stuff there is to put down.  He took one of their heavy tools and threw it across the floor.  He said "See that?  No marks!"   He said in his opinion, its the very best flooring on the market.    It certainly is easy to maintain.  I love the way it looks.   Also, the waterproof part of it is a huge plus since I live at the beach.   Very highly recommend!.

Hardwood is nice but requires sanding every few years.  If you dont mind that and its hefty price tag, go for it.

I recommend the "Life Proof" vinyl plank flooring from Home Depot. Its $3.19/square foot and can be layed down in one day over tile.  Its waterproof, easy on the feet and looks almost like real wood. It comes in over 20 colors.

There are so many flooring options these days and things like vinyl and formica have come a LONG WAY.

For a room you use every day, I would not go cheap.

Last year I removed the last of my carpeting.  On the main floor and the bedroom floor and the staircases, I have all hardwood so that it can be stripped and restained at some point by me or future owners.

I have a finish basement that I don't use other than to walk through to the back yard and for storage.

I removed the carpet and put vinyl down.  It actually looks like tile and you can't see the seam unless I point it out to you (in fact I told them not to tell me where the seam was and noticed it a few months later when I was cleaning down there.  The vinyl is very easy to remove, it's a cement floor under it.  So if future owners want to re-do the basement with something else, they can easily do it.  Also, if I decide to finish the utility room and add a full bath down there, I am not out more than a few hundred dollars for the installed vinyl.

I am also trying to decide what to do with my kitchen.  My house is 20 years old and we put Bruce hardwood in it when we built it and it looks terrible.  Lots of sun fading near the door and water spots from dogs. With the Bruce you can't have it refinshed.  In my other house we had hardwoods refinished once.  It makes a mess.

I am thinking maybe the procelin hard wood tile, but I know it's cold.  I have the vinyl plank we put in a hall way, its nice and easy to clean,  but it is vinyl.

Heading to Home Depot.

@Rose429

So sorry for the late reply.  Well it's been about a year later and I couldn't be happier with my decision.

Yes we did install luxury vinyl plank flooring to replace all the wtw carpeting in our house, even up the stairs. It was installed by professional, reputable installers. The bathrooms and kitchen already had tile floors, which we did not replace. The literature says this type of flooring is suitable for kitchens and bathrooms, but the tile would have been expensive and incredibly dusty to remove.

It was purchased and installed by the big box store with the square orange logo.

It is easy to clean with my dyson vacuum (purchased from a QVC TSV -yay!) and occasionly dust with my Campanelli stick microfiber duster (also a QVC purchase).

As I posted earlier, I have many pets and this floor has made my life easier.

At least once a day when I walk into my bedroom I stop to admire the floor and I am happy I invested in it. My sweet DH is happy with it too, in part b/c I am so happy with it.🥰

Re: Question About Flooring

[ Edited ]

I am having all the rugs and foyer tile  removed and doing the new LVP (waterproof luxury vinyl planks)  going to use Lifeproof from HomeDepot (had done in bathroom yea no more grout lines🙂).

I wish I knew about this product before I put hardwood look ceramic tile in my kitchen, utility& pantry areas.  I hate the grout always look dirty.

I can't wait til they do it ...except so many colors finishes I've got to soon make up my mind🙄

All the new housing communities use the LVP vs real hardwoods.  I assume the cost factor.

@PMG055

Thanks for update. I am concerned with noise factor (echo) since we have living area under rooms that are now carpeted.  Love idea of cleaning - easier than carpet.  But noise in living areas a concern.

I like carpet under bare feet but room carpets add to cost considerably.  Luxury vinyl in tile design with grout in kitchen nice to clean but not as slick as my old vinyl so does require some extra scrubbing motion rather than smooth vinyl.  Do the planks also have a raised texture?  How are hallways re noise?

I like carpeting and have it in the bedrooms, hallway,stairs living/fam room. Got a very nice one 3 years ago. but--I put in LVT in an upstairs bathroom and REALLY LOVE it----if we re- do the hard surface floors, will definitely be the LVT----

@Twins Mom

I did add large area rugs to all spaces with LVP.  Halls have runners.  There are several online rug outlets where you can find reasonably priced rugs.  They are so well priced that after they wear out in a few years I won't be heartbroken or budget broken to replace them.

I do have pets that occasionally have accidents (from both ends-shudder).  I find the area rugs clean up way better than carpet due to the lack of padding. But the rugs do absorb sound and they look cute!

The LVP I chose is about 7.5 mm thick which includes an attached rubber like padding which cuts down on the "hardness" feel under foot and reduces sound. Don't misunderstand- the flooring does not have "give" like carpet, but does seem less hard than tile.

Best decision I've made for the house in a long time. I had 4 bedrooms with closets, a large loft, stairway and hall done and it seemed expensive at the time but so well worth it.

Hope this helps!
