I just had an estimate for some painting work in my house.  It's for: daughter's bedroom and closet,  just changing the wall color (not the ceiling or crown molding).  In a jack and jill bathroom, just where the shower is (the ceiling) needs to be painted.  I have 4 or 5 steps that need a touch up.  Not a paint job, just touch up.  Andin the upstairs hallway a horizontal line approximately 12 to 14 inches in length that needs "fixed".  The person said it's probably just a little bit of sanding, maybe a piece of tape and repaint.  The estimate was $2400.  Just a couple of  years ago, I had several large rooms in my  house painted for less than half of that.

@ScrapHappy

That seems like a lot but probably going rate today.

In 2018 I had my entire 2000 sq ft interior and trim painted and it was $4000.

Guessing it would be about $10,000 or more today.

Afraid to even find out what tree trimming costs will be this season.

As someone in the construction biz, this sounds about right. It is actually a lot of time, and the prep work too counts, particularly when the surface is not brand new, in addition to temp. protection. You could always buy the paint yourself and provide it to them, if you wanted to try to save some money (and if they agree to that type of deal).

That seems like a lot! Really high....For that kind of money, I think I'd do whatever it takes to do it myself. If you slow down, buy the right supplies, and be very meticulous, I see no reason why one should not just do it themselves. That price for that specific amount of work---work that doesn't require specialized knowledge (like electrical or plumbing) sounds crazy insane to me.

@ScrapHappy

I agree with @ajsidney12

It sounds right to me also.

However, have you priced the cost of paint these days?  It skyrocketed during covid and NEVER came down!!!

The painter may have available discounts as a contractor that wouldn't be available to you.

Cheapest low quality paint is over $45 per gallon and depending on the finish can go $88-$100

You may need 2 coats even though you think you don't.

We just repainted 2 rooms ourselves and the paint was close to $200 each room (tax added in)

We went over a very light color and still needed 2 coats.

Two things we always do is get a 2nd estimate!!!

Much depends on where you are located, size of the rooms and the actual paint job-meaning what color are the rooms now and what color are you changing it to? If the room is a hard to cover color, what color are changing to, how much woodwork, windows and doorways are involved, what is the wall finish....there is a lot to think about when you talk about painting a room. My house interior is hard to paint, the walls are all textured-especially the ceilings-it's all decor plaster and the room ceilings are all fancy plaster work. When we hire a painter we know it is $$$$-and I always use the same one, he protects my floors properly as well as all the oak trim. If you hire a pro you should expect to get a professional job. I pay for the experience and expect that type of job. If I do it myself I know I should be fired! LOL!

@RespectLife 100%, about multiple bids. I just came back to edit my post to say the same thing!

  I'd paint those areas  myself . Just tape everything , buy good supplies , sand where needed   and use  a primer besides paint .

It seems high to me but I do know the last time I looked at interior paint it was around $90-100/gallon. It would probably be less to repaint the entire interior since the painters have to set up/prepare for painting. I know people paint for themselves all the time but I have restraints that makes that impossible for me so if I need painting done, I have to hire someone. Get quotes and recommendations if possible. There are lots of unscrupulous subcontractors out there.

I agree with other posters that say just the cost of paint has gone way up!  Plus you want to have a good quality paint used.

We had our family room & kitchen painted including ceilings last year. Cost was $2650.  It was mostly the family room since there isn't much wall space in the kitchen.

I also had him do other work like install molding in the family room, replace & paint the exterior door in the kitchen and paint some built in shelving in the family room. Because of the extra work I think he took a bit off of the paint job.

I plan on having him come back in the spring & paint the living & dining rooms. I also want some molding added and changed out.

These two rooms are basic rectangles but there are several pieces of heavy furniture to move like a piano & china cabinet.  I think they take all of that into account concerning the cost. I have not gotten an estimate yet but I am prepared for it to be around 4k....hoping it will be less but that's not including the molding, just the paint job.

If you are concerned about the price being too high, I would get another estimate.  Keep in mind professional painters will be getting discounts on paint so I can't see buying it yourself helping with the cost.
