Re: Paging Mallemo; Red Lantern progress

Whitelinen, the lantern looks fabulous. I think you did a great job with the transformation and I can't wait to see how you decorate with it.

Re: Paging Mallemo; Red Lantern progress

Thanks to all! It was simple to paint. I think I made it harder by taping & putting paper on the glass.

So those of you wanting to change the color of your lantern, go for it! Craft paint is available everywhere. I think the outdoor craft paint I used was the problem.

You can find any kind of paste wax at WM or a hardware for the metal top. That took about 5 minutes. An hour for the painting & cleaning up the glass, and you are done.

Hi rose! So happy to see you here. Yes, it is BIG!! Guess I got what I wished for!

Have to blame that old enabler mallemo this time. I really did not pay much attention to the width when I bought it; I was so concerned about getting a tall lantern. It was pretty shocking to see actually how large the thing is!

But I think it will fill up pretty quickly. May be nice to have some extra space and not have to cram things in.

Next up for the hunt is an evergreen topper with a plaid ribbon.

Are your Grandbabies back in school? Are you keeping any Littles this winter? My youngest DGK is 3, and he will be in nursery school three days a week.

My oldest DGK is 12! Hard for me to believe they are growing up. And a little sad. Don't think there will be anymore as my son (my youngest) is dating a girl with a 7 year old and they have decided that's all they want. His choice, but I am having a little trouble with it. I would never pursue it with him. Sigh.

Your paint job really turned out great. You could probably find a spray of greenery that already has some ornaments and berries on it, if that is the look you are going for. You could wire it, along with your bow to the top finial.

My DGKs are pretty young. The oldest is going to be 4 in November. She will be going to pre school two days a week- one day when her other grandma has her- one day when I have her. Her sister is only 1 1/2. That's all I have. Our other son isn't married, so no kids. Boo Hoo. Maybe your youngest son will reconsider as time goes along. I know how you feel, as I keep hoping our oldest will find a nice girl. Sure would be nice to have some grand babies from him, too! Smile

Re: Paging Mallemo; Red Lantern progress

It looks great, WL. I think you chose a perfect red.

The way I see it, it's pretty straightforward when thinking of using two candles in this--either staggering or equal heights, flameless or the VPH electric glitter candles, then adding greenery and/or other embellishments both in the lantern and attached to the top. I think this general idea is going to work nicely with this lantern.

I'm struggling to figure out what I might do, though, if I decide to use figurines for a sort of vignette inside the lantern. Since there are two identical arched display windows, I'm trying to imagine what would look best. Know what I mean? For example, if you place a Santa in one side, what will you do with the other side? Trees? Reindeer? Something shorter or taller? A snowman? Where are your thoughts headed? Anyone have any plans to share yet?

I like my lantern outside the front door so much, that in spite of its starting to show surface rust on the screws, I placed it back out there again. My mom saw it for the first time, and loved it. But would you believe that she said, "I was thinking that it would look even better and show up better if it was painted red". She doesn't read here, but she does know that I've been thinking of painting it.

You gave me a lot to think about SHOPR!!

Two luminara's, staggered like you said, would be perfect with greenery. I am too cheap to buy them right now, and my CI will probably work. HL usually carries small to medium pedestals that would give the candles extra height. I have several, but I'm using them so will search for something that might work.

I do like the Santa in the lantern. A couple of large trees to the right would look good; along with the battery operated micro lights.

SHOPR your mother has great instincts . . . the lantern just pops now. I think it would also look really good painted white, or black. It has great lines, lol!!

Not red, but I like the way this one is presented. Cute JS Santa; I'm sure JPC has this one!!

The lantern turned out nice. I probably would do something boring like put two candles in it. Good job.
