If you can, take a really good look up in the trees in the neighborhood. I had a cat get out on me once. She was gone for probably four days or so. One night I came home from work and a tree had been cut down in the backyard. For some reason I decided before bed to call out the window to her before I went to bed and I heard a cry and there she was running towards my building. I would guess she was up in the tree the entire time. I've read instinct can send them up a tree but they have no real instincts on how to get down.

When I was a kid, we had a cat that was gone for 6 weeks or so and then one day he just wandered into the yard and through the back door and acted like nothing ever happened. He was an outdoor cat but he had been neutered and and never wandered far from our property. We searched, put up posters, checked the pound. During the time he was gone, people would call and say they saw him on this street or that street or playing in the park. We'd run out and look for him but, of course, we never saw him. And then he came home....looking none the worse.....fat and healthy. So, don't give up home, he might still find his way home.

I am sorry, colliemom, but did you check your local shelter? Out here, one cannot just call, a person has to go in and look. If there are any parked cars in driveways that havn't moved for a week or so, I would check under them. It could be that someone took him in after seeing him wandering around for days.

I just remembered an incident. A cat went missing for two weeks from the barn where DD rides, and then showed up one day, very thin, and very grateful to be home.

Breaks my heart to read this!

We have three indoor cats (2 litter mates raised from 6 weeks old), so I know how you feel. I worry about this happening all the time, even though they have shown no interest in running out. I mostly worry about this in the summer when we have guests over for picnics and people go in and out all day.

I see others have asked if you checked the area shelters, so I hope you have.

We have a local online bulletin board in my town and people are frequently posting pics of lost pets. People have been reunited with their pets! Do you have such a thing in your town? That could help!

I read online stories all the time about pets coming home after extended periods of time! It happens!

I haven't read all the replies but I wanted to tell you not to give up! Did your cat have a collar and tag? My cat got out. He was gone for 10 months! I got a call from a lady from across town, about 20 miles away! She said it's snowing. Why don't you let your cat in. I was so confused and said I didn't have a cat. She asked isn't Moe your cat? I could not believe it when she said that! He'd been gone for 10 mos. He had been living across town at an apartment complex. I guess people were feeding him. She just assumed I lived in the complex too and he belonged there. He had a collar and a tag so she let him be until the weather got bad. He was hiding in her apartment when I went to pick him up. He's very timid too. I called name and he knew my voice and came running out and was meowing. I know he remembered me. Anyway, don't give up. Also he stopped trying to get out after that!

Such a good suggestion! Years ago when we had indoor/outdoor cats (ours are all indoor for many years now), we had a black cat get stuck high up in a neighbor's tree two houses down (completely forgot about that!) . I was calling and calling for him and then heard a faint meow in reply. Our neighbor got a really long ladder and we got him down.

I sure hope you find your cat. I lost my once years ago and drove around for 4 hours yelling his name. I came home and called again. I heard him next door in the neighbors backyard where he had been the whole time. He was with another cat who had him cornered and they were hissing back and forth.

I will say a prayer for you. I remember thinking our cat got out a few times and the terror was horrible. We found her in a neighbor's yard. Don't give up hope.
