QVC1234, we got some patchwork done over the summer on our roof. Cost was about $800. They put up new wood then new roof shingles, tar, etc. and they warranty the area only. It matched pretty good so you can't tell we had a leak. I didn't go through my insurance as I have a $1,000 deductible. I am not sure if you live alone but if you can get someone up in your attic above the stain to see where the water is coming from, it may turn out to be something minor. Sometimes the water can travel from another area. Don't get a roofer to check for you to see where the water is coming from as I haven't found an honest one yet. They will say the job is bigger than it is to get more $$$ from you. I got 3 estimates from roof repair people after I knew where the leak was coming from and the highest estimate was $2,000.

That is so true.

Ladies - thank you.

I'm going to start making some calls tomorrow. My husband is not repair savy so I'm going to call a handy man service to have them go up into the attic to tell me the problem. I also have a county repair person I could call so I'm going to call two people.

I hope the price is less than 1000.00 cause I'm limited on funds.

It could be that your roof is leaking into the ceiling. I think you can have someone come out and look at it free of charge, and give you an estimate.

If you have signs of possible water damage on your ceiling, I wouldn't wait to have it assessed and corrected. You can find out the cause, what is needed to fix it, and if it may be storm/ice damage covered by insurance. Water damage can be ongoing and can get much worse (and more expensive!) if it continues. Find a reputable repair person to check things out NOW.

If you have insulation over your ceiling in your crawl space or attic, pull it up and toss it where it got wet!

When water leaks thru the roof onto your ceiling and soaks thru your insulation you're risking a mold problem.
