Thank you for posting about this house. I saw that the TV documentary about the Beales was on again. I've been fascinated by the house and the inhabitants for years.
Love some of the remodels, but when I originally saw the documentary, I immediately started day dreaming about the past beauty of the original house.
Love some of the changes and think some other changes were out/are out of order.
Glad the house was rescued, in spite of some changes, but the Beales were never to be rescued. So sad.

Oh, @just bee , that picture of the new upper hall, with the blue animal print and weird blue bust of Edie? Or is it a madonna-figure? Eek, that was one that just epitomized the over-the-top nature of the redo.
Jonathan Adler is known, I think, for a sense of humor in his designs, and I'm guessing that this tableau is meant to convey a sort of irony, maybe. But, gack!

Well-put about the Beales, @Flatbush -- it is tragic, especially when you see the pictures of them in more happy times of apparent normalcy....

The original renovation from the 80's is not my design preference but it is head and shoulders above the current hideous reno.

@just bee , Thanks for the photos. They bring to mind the final scene in the Doris Day, Rock, Hudson movie "Pillow Talk" when, after learning he deceived her, she redecorates his apartment in a hostile way. There are stalactite-like protrusions along the bottom rim of the round dining tabletop. Unless they are made of something soft (like fabric), it looks like a potential hazard for anybody who may try to cross their legs while sitting at the table . . .
Hostile. I love that!
Describes that table, too!

The tabletop bottom rim stalactite design reminded me of a thread created by @Oznell that had photos of chairs with fang-like edges on the underside rim of the seats. If you are interested in seeing that thread created on 1/27/2022, typing "1908 SAN FRAN HOUSE" (in the Search & Blogs) field should bring it up.
Grrrrrrrrrreat...
