I put the crackled glass on the bottom of the windows in my bedroom. You would have to be on a ladder to see inside! I like that feature.

I put Okna triple paned windows in my home over the last couple of years. Okna makes a very nice, energy efficient vinyl window. They are a relatively small but growing company. If you are in the market for new windows, see if you have an Okna dealer in your state. It is worth a look.

@Mistreatedbycs, thank you for your recommendation of Window World, they are in our area and wondered about them. Our house is over 50 yrs old, and our windows need replacement, we have about the amount of windows you have and I don't think that is a bad price, I was thinking closer to $5000!

I like them and getting quotes upon quotes for windows, these people were the most reasonable. Home windows were approx 50 years old and my store windows were original 1920's.

Not sure how your franchise works but my salesman charged the same price no matter what size it was. Also, since the old windows were of the "lead age" you are paying a disposal price but it wasn't that much.

I told several people about Window World and they snubbed their nose, I don't know why but windows are guaranteed for life, they work, and they look good and their contractors did an outstanding job finishing the outside.

@SeaMaiden, the prices can be daunting. We live in a cold climate and there are $249 a window places around that stay in business. However, we replaced our eighteen year old windows with ones of much better quality. They were all different sizes, but I'd tell a person that a rough estimate would be $1000 a window unless every window in your house is very small.

What do you mean "you can't see inside at night"?
Have you ever seen office buildings where you can't see in during the day but at night if the lights are on, someone is sitting at their desk?

During the day, you can't see in mind. They look black from the outside.

I need to see how they look at night with the lights on to see if you can see in.

I went out just now and looked inside my house from outside, and you can see inside when the lights are on.

I’m dying to put in hurricane impact glass. I have not gotten any estimates yet. I have way too many windows and they are all huge. Many of the neighbors in my development just finished putting them in. We had a horrendous hurricane season last year with a gigantic category 5 storm staring everyone right in the face. I was terrified. I was so relieved when the storm changed course just before coming ashore. Whew.

@Mindy D ~ The windows were replaced back in 2000, so way before retirement. I absolutely agree that such a big investment is scary when one's retired. I guess one can opt for replacing the "worst" windows, but I don't know how efficient that would be. You have to do what is financially comfortable for you, so maybe replacing a couple at a time won't feel so overwhelming moneywise. I'm sure you'll figure out the best solution, and you can always ask family and friends for their opinions. Life, always full of decisions.

I'm so jealous. I want new windows. Our house was built in 1971 and I'm pretty sure that most of the windows are original. Probably only the ones upstairs, since that part was added by a previous owner, are new. Glad for that, though, as there are four HUGE windows up there and they catch a lot of sun.

We just had a new roof put on before the winter. Almost paid off - yay! That was over $15,000 but my husband's office gave him a $5,000 bonus to pay toward the balance. Nice gift! Maybe some new windows this year? Prob not. hehe
