Re: New windows for our home

[ Edited ]

I had all of mine replaced with that '365 comfort glass' windows (not Champion). That glass makes all the difference in the world. Mine were constructed here locally because I live at high elevation so the argon gas would stay in place. Yes, they were expensive but I'm so happy that I can be anywhere in my house and not feel a temperature change. The sound insulation is a plus, too.

After they installed my windows I had an insulation company come to my house to perform a whole house 'negative air pressure test' to check for any leaks. My new windows checked out perfectly.

Re: New windows for our home

I would like to replace our windows. We only have 6 windows and a very large sliding glass door. The ones we have seem to be pretty low quality - we hear a lot of noise from outside, and they are very lightweight. I'd like to get hurricane glass, and get the ones that you can flip the outside to the inside for cleaning, so we wouldn't have to crawl thru the bushes and get on a ladder to wash the outside of the windows. Getting DH to agree though is difficult. I figure sooner or later they will have to be replaced so we may as well do it now and enjoy them longer.

We did a few at a time over a period of years. There are a few still not replaced, but I don’t think we will do them as they are not impacted by weather very much.

We replaced 27 floor-to-ceiling (wide) windows about 30 years ago with triple-pane (with argon) glass windows. They were custom-made of walnut fit each window and stained to match the current woodwork on the inside. We chose clad windows on the outside to match the new siding and trim. Once installed, my husband also had the attic insulated. (Which I've had more added in recent years.) The difference in comfort, quiet, low utility bills and no fading of drapes or furniture was amazing! We also replaced the sliding doors (which we both disliked) with double-opening doors for security and appearance a few years later. Life-time warranty transfer to next homeowner. Best investment ever! Don't skimp on windows.

ETA: Check out the work of the installer! He is the key to a proper fit and an excellent job.

Re: New windows for our home

We waited and got nice...good quality windows like we wanted....

I went with Window World and was 100% happy with them...

I tranformed my front window from a "picture' window to a beautiful bow window that I always wanted.

I also took out the drafty Anderson window the builder put in....in the Family room and made that one a small Bay window...

I got mutins or grids in between the glass on the others.... I think we paid 12,000 for all of it...

We just got an estimate for our two story house for 26 windows. Several of our windows are almost floor to ceiling in height. The estimate was over $24,000.00 for the cost of the windows and the installation. I thought my husband and I were going to have to give each other CPR.

@06greatwife    actually that is a pretty good quote for 26 windows.....   but, say... why not do half now  and half in say a year? Then that price will not look so huge.  If I could I would do that, but, we are having siding done and want the windows in before the siding.   If we do the windows later after the siding, there would most likely be damage done to the framing of the siding around the windows..

Our 12 windows with sales tax is about $20,000  as we have several big windows in the front of the house  like you do that are floor to ceiling... and odd shaped windows as well so they have to be custom made for us.  That ups the price by a lot.

I replaced 12, 5 years ago.  Well spent money.  Less dust, less noise and less heating and cooling.  Doesn't get much better than that.

Re: New windows for our home

We moved into our new home two years ago.  The previous owners (original owners) of the house put in all new windows.  I'm so glad they did because I have 26 windows.  On the main floor alone I have 7 windows that are at least 5 feet tall.  We had to replace one because our landscaper broke it and it cost over $1700 to replace.  Finding out the are high end, expensive windows.  Now I just have to find the time to clean them all.

I just had 11 windows replaced a month ago.

My home was also 25 years old and the builder put in cheap windows from a manufacturer that went out of business.

Metal window frames are expensive to remove, that was the bulk of the cost as they have to factor in the labor for that.

However, it was money well spent and I think they will pay for themselves very quickly.  My home has not gotten above 71 even when it's been close to 100 outside.  The noise reduction is my favorite feature.

I'm told you can't see inside at night, but I haven't been out after dark to test it yet.

I'm glad I spent the money.

What do you mean "you can't see inside at night"?

What do you mean "you can't see inside at night"?

Have you ever seen office buildings where you can't see in during the day but at night if the lights are on, someone is sitting at their desk?

During the day, you can't see in mind.  They look black from the outside.

I need to see how they look at night with the lights on to see if you can see in.
