New composite deck anyone?

I'm in the process of getting estimates from builders to build a composite deck and I need recommendations about what to look for as far as materials, construction and any issues pertaining to composite decking in general. Any words of advice are welcome. TIA

We are on our 3rd year with ours. We love ours. As for as advice it can scratch and it shows water marks. With our pets when it rains we see muddy paw marks and it just doesn't spray off I have to get out my carpet scrubber

Some materials and colors get much hotter than others, so depending on your sun exposure and temps it can make a big deal.

I think the problem was fixed but it is worth looking into.....the fire ratings.

Some of the composite materials are very flamable. Friends of our lost their entire home after the deck caught fire. The entire deck all 425 sq ft of it was in full flames in seconds and of course the entire house caught fire. It was an awful experience.

We recently had our old wood deck completely torn off and replaced with Trex. I love it. I chose a light grey color with white railing. It was expensive but worth it.

It's the way we''re going when our deck needs replacing in a few years. Nice to read your experiences. Just ordered Polywood Adirondack chairs, similar material idea (Nebraska Furniture Mart). Heard great reviews.

@itsmagic I just removed my pressure treated floorboards of my deck and replaced them with composite boards! I also did the handrails over in composite- a nice upgrade and I saved thousands. Fortunately the base structure was above code and could support the composite boards. They are weighty !!

Replaced deck with Vekadeck composite slightly over year ago. It does not get slippery when wet. Does get somewhat hot in direct sun. So glad to have even surface. Currently busy blowing off pollen but easily washes off. Rails are metal. So glad to have easy cleanings.

@Ibby114 I was originally hoping to be able to save money by using the frame of the old deck as you did but unfortunately ours was not up to specifications for putting Trex decking boards on it plus it was no longer up to code for township inspection.

Gets hot in direct sun. You might want an awning over part of it.

When we built our sunroom about 10 years ago, the walkway and stairs to the yard were done in Trex. It can be affected by high heat and strong sunlight, so it’s important to leave a little space between the boards for expansion. It’s held up really well over the years, but algae can grow on the surface, so there’s still some maintenance. Even though it’s just the walkway and stairs, it’s held up much better than our old deck.
