Love my Samsung washer and dryer. I don't use the steam function very often though. It has a large capacity and I love that I can wash delicate clothes using the "hand wash" cycle. Even if clothing says "hand wash" I throw it in the washer. Does a great job. They were pricey little devils, but I don't regret buying the Samsung brand. I always sop up any water left in the rubber seal after each wash...takes 30 seconds. Have never had any smelly issues.

For years now, I have relied on independent testing of items that show the best item, along with their pricing. I usually access their website on major purchases and find their testing and guidance valuable. This website...
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/washing-machines.htm
can give you this information. To get more detailed info, they require an annual membership.
Sometimes I pay it - sometimes I just let it lapse.
People tend to value washer and dryer features in different ways - as with other appliances.
I depend on the testing done in these labs to give me non-biased info to make my own judgment. With so many products being offered in today's market, it is confusing when you are considering all the options.
Just thought I would offer this as another way, to view your options to make your decision.
Good Luck!!

Do not buy a Whirlpool Cabrio it is a piece of junk, I think it lasted maybe 3 years. This had no agitator and was the worst washing machine I ever owned. Stay away from all the bells and whistles. I think the problem with the Cabrio was the controller board. It got to the point I was taking the back of the washing machine apart. I now own a GE washer and dryer. Washing machine is HE and has an agitator, I use the manual settings on the washing machine to set the water levels for the clothes I am washing.

I have a Samsung, that as someone mentioned, is pretty pricey. I too dry out the seal every time, but it still has a lingering smell. Water collects inside the rubber around the tub and under it. Very difficult to get to in order to wipe dry. I would go back to top loader regular no bells and whistles in a heart beat. I seem to clean the washer as much as my clothes.

Another vote for LG! We've had them about 5 years with no problems. We leave the washer door open and have no smell. I find that our clothes are cleaner as well. It took me a while to get used to them, but I'm glad I did!

My assistant just replaced his front loaders with a new Maytag system (top loader) and he actually spent a morning home with his wife, watching the laundry. They are DEE-lighted with the set. (This guy is so much fun--we've worked together almost 10 years, and he's my Guy Friday. He loves domestic stuff--being home, he does the cooking, but he's a guy-guy as well and loves sports. I rely on him for this kind of advice.)
I think it's the Bravos (has a clear lid) and he's very happy with it. I have Samsungs, I like them, but I don't think I'll ever buy a front loader again. He said something about the washer not having the old fashioned agitator that destroys clothing but has an impeller. I have a Maytag dishwasher, and I'm thrilled with this brand. I think they are a great American brand and fairly priced compared to German or Asian imports.

I bought an Electrolux front loading stacked set seven months ago and now love doing laundry! There is so little water used, has HUGE capacity, and I can complete four loads in two hours! I do leave the washer door and soap dispenser open after washing and have not noticed any odors. Love everything about my set.

Our GE washer which was 6 years old gave out last week -- the motor burned out. So I wouldn't recommend that brand.
We found one with a low/no agitator from Sears and we LOVE LOVE LOVE it. It's a Kenmore I think. Hopefully it will last longer than the last one. There are only two of us (and 4 cats).

On 9/23/2014 IamMrsG said:When I was shopping two years ago, I insisted on a top loader with an agitator. It took some time to find one like that, but we bought a GE without a lot of bells or whistles.
I am pleased with the choice I made. It's just we two here, so, depending on the week, we do 4 - 6 loads a week. Our clothes come out clean and without permanently set-in wrinkles (from high-speed spinning).
I did the same, I recently got a Hotpoint like that, made by GE.

Just a side comment here for any washing machine shoppers: the new agitator-free HE machines do NOT work well with tankless water heaters. The hot water heating feature is not triggered on as the machine fills.
I was thinking of getting a HE machine and stumbled on this information completely by accident. I called LG as well as the water heater company, and they both confirmed this. I know most people don't have a tankless water heater, but we do! I nearly made a terrible, expensive mistake.
