I'm probably one of the few people on the planet happy about the down size in width. When I replaced my toilet paper holder in my powder room, I didn't re-drill the holes and so the toilet paper was always a tight fit until I came home one day and it fit perfectly.
Problem solved ![]()

Please feel free to laugh, but I actually did this!
The toilet paper marketing situation is without a doubt the most confusing sales "pitch" (or smart marketing program by the mfrs) that I've ever seen. 12 double rolls = 24 large rolls, 12 MEGA rolls = 36 large rolls, 2-ply, 1-ply, and all the brands are different as to how many sheets per roll, etc. and how many square feet are in a package. One day when I was in the store I took the time to look at different brands, and rolls within brands, etc. -- It would take Einstein to figure what is the best buy for your money. One brand that I buy a lot had two different packages that actually showed a different amount of tissue within the large roll from one package to the other. I know it sounds silly, but I got so irritated I called the company and asked how they could have one Large roll with this many sheets, and another Large roll with a different number of sheets, which was about 50 sheets less. She said they were changing over to the smaller roll - I made the point that this was fraudulent advertising as they were charging the same for both! I wound up with several really good dollars off coupons as a result of my call. So now I just stick to one brand and stock up only when it's on a good sale.
And yes, I do have better things to do with my time, but this had irritated me for a long time and I decided to take the time to check it out. Packaging of many, many products has gotten smaller and the prices have either remained the same or gone up - it's just reality.
And the other little "trick" they're using now is to make a roll look the same size as a larger roll, but it's because the cardboard tube is larger, not because there is more product rolled around it! How's that for being misleading???

I agree that I would rather pay more and have more TP on the roll. It's an unnecessary annoyance to have to change out the roll so often when there's no need for the downsized roll.

Toilet paper was rated in the current issue of Consumer Reports.
1. White Cloud Ultra 3 ply (Walmart) -- highest rated, 0.25 per 100 sheets
2. Charmin Ultra Strong -- 0.41 per 100 sheets
3. Quilted Northern Ultra Plush -- 0.38
4. Up & Up (what a strange name for toilet paper) -- Target -- 0.20
5. Great Value WalMart -- 0.27

Add to that the fact that men are genetically unable to install a new roll.

The rolls we get from Costco are so fat, they barely fit in the holder (they're not wide, they just have a lot of paper on them). The first three or four times you use the roll, it's really difficult to pull enough off. I end up getting lots of single squares.
They weren't like that a year ago, when they were individually wrapped in tissue paper. Now they just come in a huge outer plastic wrap. It must be the only grocery product that got bigger, not smaller.

OP, ITA, with all the downsizing of products and increases in prices, for some reason this one irritates me the most. Don't know why it does, but it does. lol

There's only 2 of us, but I still buy the 20 roll packs (3 bathrooms). There are 1,000 sheets on each roll. I buy Scott's if it's on sale; if not, I buy Stop & Shop brand.
