Need some advice on flooring

We live on a farm in a 100+ year old farmhouse. We are adding a 24 x 16 family room which will serve also as our living room. Our present living room will become a dining room and our kitchen will be remodeled to include an island.

We are very laid back, not formal people, and have one cat and one dog who are indoors. I do not want carpeting (allergies). The new room will have a lot of light as we are having many windows and a skylight or two.

What type of flooring? We have very informal furniture, (I do have a couple of antique rocking chairs that have tapestry fabric). We will have a big flat screen TV in the room in an entertainment center that is oak, trim will be oak, walls will be plaster.

OK, decorating divas. What are your ideas? I welcome all ideas. I need something that can stand up to our dog's nails, is not too difficult to maintain (I have health issues), and can fit for a family room with also being the living room. By the way, our friends are also very informal people, so our idea of this room serving a dual purpose will not be a problem, either.

Thanks for all your ideas.
