@SharkE- Wow, I'm impressed with the "after shot". What a difference. Congratulations on a job well done.

No white for me my kitchen is a working kitchen. Stay clean looking about one day. LOL
I'm tackling the bathrooms when my husband is gone for a week and I have the run of the place. LOL
Oak, this time. I got plenty left over from the painter guy who didn't use it like he should had 7 yrs. ago. It's faded out in there, too.
I'll do more shots when I attempt my next big thing. LOL

Did you wash the cabinets down with with some type of degreaser or TSP before you painted them?

yes

Thank you for the information. I'm going to go look and see what color I might choose. I would consider having your beautiful cabinets sealed. On my cabinets, even after having the doors refinished professionally, the tops have begun to wear off and you can actually see the wood in places. I don't believe for a minute that they were sealed properly. It's just me and my husband and so they don't get a lot of wear and tear.

Yeah, after I've rested and feel up to going back in the ring (LOL) I'll pay that guy 100 probably. right now I'm tired of smelling wood stain and gas to clean up my brushes in.
I put on my big girl panties and get 'er done. I deserve a rest at 65. As Frank Sinatra crooned "I did it my way". LOL I wanted to get it done, too, while the a/c and fans could be on instead of being cooped up in winter and can't go outside to get turpentine/gas for clean up , etc.

The dark cabinets are beautiful, Sharke. I prefer off-white cabinets for myself because I have a really small home, but I also love that dark mahogany wood color. I have floors that aren't quite that shade, but are more like a dark cherry. The color of those cabinets is my favorite wood color.

@SharkE wrote:Yeah, I can afford it, but, I hate dealing with people. They shaft you every time. don't show up when they're suppose to, don't call you, you have to hide your good stuff when strangers around. So forth and so on.
Will take me months, but, the tortoise beat the hare. LOL
After all this 'stuff' I'm gonna do the vanities, but, leave them Oak and use up that can I got of it. Oak looks good with the white varigated sinks.
Exactly why my husband tries to do everything himself. Some things we have to hire folks to do and its like rolling the dice.
I have a question @SharkE, my cabinets are golden oak, they are faded. I love the way your darker ones look. Do you have to sand them down prior to putting the varnish on? Sorry if this is common sense, I have never done it before. Have lived here 20 years and our once gorgeous oak cabinets need a facelift. This would be much cheaper than buying new.

No, I didn't do anything elaborate. I wiped them down with a wet hand towel and little dishwashing liquid to get grease and little spots off them. Got a one inch brush from Walmart. They got 'good', better, 'best' line of brushes or you can go with one of the real pricey brushes like 15 a piece. I got one for 6 think it was , then, for the end of the counters I got a mini roller brush to do the big end sections that's one big flat section of wood. Those roller brushes eat the stain though. They soak it up like a sponge. Just use them on the big flat end sections though.
I wanted to do this ONCE, so, I got a darker color and put it on with a heavy hand. LOL None of this 'stuff' where I'd have to do it all over again in a few yrs. I'm surprised at the glossy shine it has to it. Glad, though.
I guess that 'Provincial' wood stain by Rust oleum has some gloss to it.
I call it dark oak. Those oaks are just to light and don't stand the test of time. I got black quartz counters, brick backsplash, and all stainless appliances and I think it works. I didn't want to put varnish on it seems like that is to weak and wouldn't hold up I went for wood stain. I did mine on the cheap thru Walmart and me doing the work.
If your of the mind you can go to an actual place that sells paint and take a picture and ask them their opinion on what you want to accomplish. I just knew I wanter darker and wanted it to last. He didn't want to spend out big money at this point in our lives and I thought it wouldn't take that long. I found out it was a labor LOL you don't see all the little hidden areas till you get into the job. Edges of doors . Top, bottom and sides. Shelf dividers have to be painted any exposed wood showing. I didn't do the insides. LOL Why I said later on when we sell the place if the gal who buys the place doesn't like my job I can give her a credit to replace them or whatever, but, I'm not painting the insides of all those doors !
Good luck and start a thread when you start and finish !

Thank you, @SharkE. It really looks great, I am going to try to get up the nerve to do it! I may start in the small bathroom in case my project doesn't come out as good as yours! Thanks for sharing those pics and the info. It really does look awesome.
