Re: Need kitchen backsplash opinion

TO OP~
I went back to school for an ASID after I could no longer work as a nurse (due to health issues). Our main professor said “the first rule in interior design is; there are no rules”! A bit of a broad statement but, I believe she was trying to say~do what you love and keep things classic. “Classic” is another broad word. I interpret it as classic to the period of the home.

I love the new glass tiles and, if your on a budget the project will be that easier. Think of your kitchen ~ cabinets~colour & style, your appliances, countertops & flooring. You can certainly mix textures and shapes of the tile to suit your taste. The trick is to keep the tile in the period of the rest of the kitchen.
“Contemporary” is the current fashion. “Modern” is a period from the 1950’s & 60’s. I never understood that until I was in design school!
We had our kitchen gutted and totally redone about 8 years ago. It’s open to our dining room and divided by a two tier island~the island has granite on the kitchen side and a curved, maple top countertop on the dining room side; very similar to our dining room furniture.

We were fortunate enough to have custom cabinets made. I had most done in a light matte cherry & glazed and the oven hood and island painted & glazed in cream. We did mouldings to have the cabs meet the ceiling in the kitchen and columns & crown moulding in the dining room.
As for our backsplash~ we did a honed marble. A creamy subway tile that has a very fine gold veining in it. Then by the oven, we did a feature with 4x4 tile on the diagonal with matte brass metal accents with a laurel leaf pattern; the design was “framed” in a quarter round tile frame. The whole thing is very classic/old world looking.

Our home is 40 years old now~So, my point is if you live in a traditional home, keep it somewhat traditional. If you live in a mid century modern house~stay with that theme, etc. Keeping the home updated but, in it’s time period aesthetically. You can always add pops of your own style here & there....that’s what makes decorating so much fun!
I hope you find a pretty and easy to install tile ~ in glass, or another material. I love the glass look and am thinking of doing a band of it in our 1/2 bath.
I wish you good luck & an interesting and beautiful project!!! 🏡

@ ERIE~ all the times in the photos are gorgeous and, look greT with the cabinets. I personally like the last one best as I like the natural stone look.
If any of those photos are yours; then kudos to you!!! Either way the examples of tile are just gorgeous! You have a good eye for design!!!

Re: Need kitchen backsplash opinion

@Zsazsa, Thank You.  It'll be a few months before I get started. I also want to drop lighting down the breakfast bar. I can't wait to get started.
