We are in the process of preparing to move and we go to the liquor stores for our boxes. We have filled nearly 70 boxes so far. They are super strong and FREE! We just pull around to the back of the store and ring their buzzer. They come out and let us take however many we can fit in our car.

When we moved, which was a  local move, and we had professional movers, I went to our local grocery store and asked if they would save banana boxes for me.  They did and there was no charge for them.  These boxes are very strong and hold plenty.  The moving men had no problems with them, either.

The local supermarket or any other restaurant will gladly give you the boxes they get in most days or on delivery days.  You'll save them the effort of breaking them down.  Any business that is constantly getting deliveries to stock their shelves or operate will be happy to donate.

You may even be able to just stalk their dumpster and load your car right up.  But if they break them down which most recycling or waste companies require, you may want to just ask inside and they'll stack them for you for pick up.

@Laura14  Most businesses that get lots of boxes now bundle them for recycling.  They are huge bundles or bales secured by straps and cannot be retrieved.  I'd be careful about using some boxes; you could pick up an infestation of roaches or bedbugs

I love the tape sold at U-Haul.  They also have boxes and packing supplies.

Check Craigslist and Freecycle.  A lot of people that have already moved list their moving boxes for free or a nominal fee rather than put them in recycling or trash.

I got some from a liquor store, Wal Mart, and my grocery store too.

Liquor, cereal, egg, microwave or electronic boxes are real thick cardboard - I always  keep a few up in the attic - sturdy boxes that come in handy once in a while.

Maybe just call the store before hand to make sure what would be the best time or better day of the week to go.

I think shopping around and going from place to place to save a dollar would be the least of my time spent. Especially if any boxes going into storage, they do break down and sag if in there for awhile.

Re: Moving Boxes

[ Edited ]

I moved a year ago, and I got boxes from several places.

My moving company sold new boxes, but I asked for used ones and was given lots of  those for free.  (They were in great condition.)

Boxes from liquor stores are good because they're usually pretty sturdy.  Grocery stores are a good source too.  Go in and ask the manager what day of the week is best.  Otherwise, you take a chance on showing up and being told they had all been crushed/recycled the day before.  I had a few local stores offer to set boxes aside for me.

Home Depot sells boxes in various sizes, and the prices are very reasonable.  I also got packing tape, bubble wrap, paper to wrap my china and crystal, and things of that sort there, all low-cost.  Keep in mind that you'll need boxes of all sizes.  Gigantic ones are only good for things that aren't very heavy (such as books.)

I did pay for the wardrobe boxes provided by the moving company.  I felt the cost for those was more than worth it.

Good luck!

I'm on the website nextdoor dot com every day - and people post that they have boxes to give away. I gave away several small & mid-size boxes as I'm always shopping Walmart or Costco on-line. Going into liquor stores is a good idea - they have clean boxes.
