My daughter was looking for a new mattress.  She was telling me that rules have changed and the mattresses have to be coated or created with some sort of chemicals. Not sure what she meant but she was fearful of sleeping with anything that had been treated for whatever. If anyone has information please advise.

Re: Mattress manufacture rules

Tell her to try Satava. Someone on the forums bought one. No chemicals in it. Tell her to search Green beds with no chemicals on Google.

@bonnielu.   If she was shopping for a mattress, surely the salesman gave her information on this treatment.  I would assume it's something beneficial and not harmful

They use pesticides, chemicals like antimony or formaldehyde, flame retardant when manufacturing a mattress.

Need to look for one that has the GOTS or GOLS certification label on it. Don't fall for anything that says it's Natural that means nothing.

I do believe that most are treated with a fire retardant. There are organic ones out there, but she will pay more for it.

Re: Mattress manufacture rules

We learned of this mattress - chemical issue last year after our friend's mother had a terrible reaction to the chemicals in her new mattress.  It triggered a MAJOR immune system attack.

It has been over a year and she is just now starting to recover.

It took almost 6 months of tests before someone realized it was the chemicals in the mattress.

She now has an organic cotton/wool mattress.

Who would have guessed?!?!

I thought it was the law that all mattresses have to be flame retardant.Just as childrens clothing has to be flame retardant.

Re: Mattress manufacture rules

I would never have thought about it, but she seems determined to GET IT RIGHT and be safe.  She is very sensitive and I guess just has to look hard for her own solution.

Thanks to all who answered me.
