I have two matellese spreads on beds in my house. I have been washing them and drying them in the dryer for 7 years and they look fine. It never entered my mind that I should dry clean them.

imxpnsive--I'm afraid I'm going to have to go against the general consensus here! Often it's not the fabric itself, but the finishing process that determines whether the material can be laundered or must be dry cleaned. Whether or not it was previously dry cleaned won't have any effect on laundering it, though. It really depends on how much you love your coverlet, or how special it is to you! Will you be heartsick if the results are less than you expected? It may be fine, or not. I wouldn't chance it, but if you're willing to, go for it!
ETA--This is all assuming that the care instructions are dry clean only!--I always put my quilts in the washer, but I know they are to be laundered, because I made them!

I have a king size matelase coverlet and shams - i wash and dry them in the large machines at the laundramat. They actually wash very nicely. I once washed mine in my home washer and it was difficult because it was too heavy and the load kept going off balance.

I have one that goes along the bottom of the bed, folded.
I have been washing it in the washer and dryer for about 4 years,no problem, looks like new.

If you do it in a larger washer at the mat you won't be stressing yours and then you can go ahead and dry it in a larger dryer. good luck!On 5/2/2014 Fabby said:Fabric and any fill content?
It is 100% Cotton....no fill....

I have one as well, not king but I wash and dry at home as it will fit in my washer and dryer. It did shrink a bit so beware if you cannot afford to have yours shrink. My dry cleaners can also do the machine washing for me if my machine could not handle it. That might work better if you are concerned about using a machine at a public laundromat.

I have a very heavy winter quilt that I let the drycleaners wash for me every couple of years. That's what the tag says, it also says no dry cleaning for some reason.

I've had good luck with using those home dry cleaning kits in the dryer. I have front loaders so it holds the king size bedding. The weight is the big ""issue"" to think about. The dryer seems to tolerate it better than the washer. This is a big consideration with cotton in the washer. I wash mine in the washer but I do babysit it a bit. You might want to consider taking it to a dry cleaner that launders as a first step or using their washers and dryers. I have found that it depends on the quality of the fabric and stitching to see if it holds up without dry cleaning. I have a bedding setting on mine and that makes a difference for what I have.
Good Luck.
