Matelasse Coverlet.....need advice.....please.....

I have a beautiful Matelasse Coverlet that I bought from Dillard's a few years ago.....it is white, a king, and I no longer choose to pay for dry-cleaning it.....you can just imagine what that costs.....it is heavy....my question is....should I chance taking it to a laundromat and chance washing and semi-drying it? Would anyone take a chance? This thing is heavy dry, I could not imagine the weight wet. Thank you for your input....

Yes. Mine is cotton and I wash it at my laundromat. They have oversized washer/dryers. The cost is about 5 for wash and 3 for dry.

I have two full-size matelase coverlets and I've always put them in the washer and dryer. They come out beautifully. If they've shrunk any, I haven't noticed.

I wash and dry mine at home without any problems.

I'm not sure what happens if wash an item that has been dry cleaned previously. How do the solvents left in the fabric react to water and the heat of the dryer? I tried to look online, but I couldn't find any information in a quick search. I think you need to talk to a couple of different dry cleaners to ask them if it's okay to wash your coverlet.

If it's 100% cotton then I would take it to the laundromat and wash but would bring it home to line dry.

If it's too heavy to lift after washing then I'd dry for 10-15 minutes to remove some moisture then line dry at home.

I have a CC set of bedding from the other channel in my guest bedroom that said dry clean only. Super shiny/ornate metallic coverlet with polyester filling and Euro shams.

Got it on clearance, didn't pay much for it so I decided to take a chance and wash it. Washed and dried like a dream!

I love matelassie bed spreads and coverlets and I own several. I received a beautiful one as a wedding gift 41 years ago made by Bates. It's still beautiful. I have always just thrown them into my home clothes washer and use cool water. I toss them into the dryer on medium heat and remove while still a bit damp and hang to dry. They aren't all that heavy after the spin dry and I can easily manage to handle them by myself. I never thought to dry clean them.

I agree that you should be fine taking it to the Laundromat. I would put it in the extractor after washing to remove more water. Much less trying time that way. Good luck.
