Good Morning Ladies,

I am in my late 60's and recently moved, we purchased a king size bed so there would be more room for our 2 cocker spaniels to sleep. I am so undecided about decorating the bed. I bought a comforter but rarely put it on the bed it is so heavy, I don't feel like making the bed most days and putting on all the pillows. Am I just lazy or is this normal?

What's the difference how the room is decorated if you don't make the bed? I like to have a comforter on the bed because it is easier to make the bed than a bedspread.

Re: Master Bedroom Decoration

Our shepherd had never been on our bed. I don't think she minds. That said I would never use a comforter that wasn't machine washable. Ours is a gorgeous Ralph Lauren Nanking design and use that blue and white oriental motif throughout the room and bath. With crisp white sheets---our bed looks pretty even when it's unmade.

Re: Master Bedroom Decoration

When we switched from a Queen to King beg, I gave up on "comforters" because the size and weight was just too much for me to clean as often as I wanted to. We have 5 cats and at any given time, at least one or two get on the bed.

With two pups, I'm sure you will have the same issues. What's the point of a big, beautiful comforter if the animals are flopping around on it anyway?

What I did do is switch over to a lightweight bedspread that can be easily laundered. Right now, I'm using a brick red seersucker spread with navy sheets. I rarely "make" my bed, but straighten out the covers when we rise.

Our bedroom is not fancy or frilly, but with lots of windows and a fireplace, I have enough going on without too many "trimmings." I have a lot of windows and lovely Victorian style furniture with my poster bed, and a traditional oriental on the floor.

Make it easy on yourself and keep it simple!

Thanks Witchey Woman, your ideas are very helpful. Will get rid of the comforter and get a bedspread. We love our dogs and don't have a problem with them being in bed with us. Thanks for your help,

If you don't need the comforter for warmth, I wouldn't out it on. In the winter, I need a comforter. I straighten it out, so the bed has the illusion that it's made. In warmer months, I use a colorful quilt. The room is painted a seafoam color. I have a quilt that has lots of color, one being seafoam.

Re: Master Bedroom Decoration

I do not take my comforter off our king bed every night, I simply fold it down several times and leave it on the very end, then fold it back when I make the bed. Our dog does not lay on the comforter, she is usually on the top blanket when we get ready for bed. If you do not want a lot of fancy pillows, you certainly do not need them. Find a comforter with shams you love, it will look beautiful. Its your room, you should do whatever you want!

Re: Master Bedroom Decoration

We redid our master a few years ago and I bought a beautiful QVC king bed set. Kept the comforter and shams got rid of all the decorative pillows about a week later. Did not like all the clutter. Less is better...for me anyway.

By comforter, I don't know if you mean a down comforter or a heavy cotton comforter. You could buy a lightweight down comforter in a color and then pull it up and the bed is made. Don't have dogs, but there's usually a pile of cats with us, ha, ha.

Re: Master Bedroom Decoration

I have a beautiful bedspread under my blankets. It has never seen the light of day because of my animals through the years. I bought an electric blanket for my senior dog this year and use other fluffy blankets. When I last pet is gone, I don't plan on getting another one. Mine live so long, which is a blessing but I am not that young anymore.

One of these days I will have a beautiful bedroom set and the bedspread will look brand new but I am certainly not in any hurry, I can wait. I would rather have my dog on the bed and the other 4 pets I use to have.
