MONKEY SEE, MONKEY DO SYNDROME

How many times have you read posts on the Forum about a product someone has purchased and all of a sudden it hits you, " I have to get this"? I have done this a lot of times and I wonder how much QVC sells due to Forum members informing others about the availability of products or that they have purchased an item and loved it. It will be interesting to see how much we are influenced by this scenario.

Re: MONKEY SEE, MONKEY DO SYNDROME

The one thing I can say for sure the Forums talked me into is WEN. I wasn't going to try it, wasn't, wasn't, wasn't. And then came a 5-flavor TSV in 2009 and there I was, ordering WEN. Still using it.

Some of the things I think Forum poster seem to try hardest for us to get on the bandwagon for - Linea, Ripka, lots of cosmetics - they haven't persuaded me yet.

But it works the other way, too. I think there are things lots of posters want me to quit buying - Graver and bronze jewelry come to mind. Nothing anyone has posted has made me stop buying either.

I think the shopping channels encourage monkey see, monkey do. How many times have we heard "many of you are buying more than one."

I have ordered things after reading about them on this forum many more times than I care to admit! Sometimes they've been amazing buys and sometimes they were items I really had no use for.

I'm better about this than I used to be, though. Now I grill myself on whether or not it's something I need before I hit the "complete order" button.

Guilty as charged! I especially do it in this particular forum, as people post pics or details of how they use a particular product, then I think "Hey! I have something that I can use to do almost the same thing", and sometimes talk myself out of it.

I think we sell just as well as the hosts do!

I would guess that this is why the boards are here, for us to help them sell products. And yes, I have bought because people here on the boards raved about certain items. I really have stopped, sometimes I still almost do it, but stop myself before I pull the trigger, once I consider if I will really use/wear the item. It is nice though, to get other's opinions.

Re: MONKEY SEE, MONKEY DO SYNDROME

I am grateful for the helpful posts on the forums. I bought many items from info on the Q forums. However, I would say that about 50% of them I have bought from other online sites/stores/vendors and not the Q.

Speaking for myself of coarse, I also don't look at it as 'monkey see, monkey do' because I pick and choose what I want. Just because someone posts about an item, doesn't necessarily mean it's my taste, I like it, or want it Smile

Re: MONKEY SEE, MONKEY DO SYNDROME

I absolutely have purchased items because someone on these forums talked about them. I am so thankful that a place exists where I can visit with others who are interested in decorating and entertaining as most of my friends are not interested. Also, I'm not much of a shopper. I don't visit B&M stores regularly and I don't watch shopping channels except for recording VPH and LR decorating shows. I really appreciate the posters here for sharing their finds and ideas.

I do try to avoid impulse purchases. I try to think long and hard about how I might use an item and where it will be stored when not in use. Sometimes, the storage issue alone will keep my order finger from pressing the submit button.

I firmly believe that is the only reason these boards still exist. We all talk about the products, the TSV, etc. This has to be a profitable venture for QVC, or with the occasional craziness on the boards it would have been long gone.

I have been on these boards since the inception--since "Shop Talk". I have always enjoyed them. I absolutely have purchased items after reading about them here. This is the first place I come if there is a TSV I am interested in. I come here to see what everyone is saying about it, if they think it is a good value, etc.

Love the boards!
