Looking for recommendations for a carpet cleaner

Our carpet is 3 years old now and is a very light color. It needs cleaned and I thought instead of paying a company to do it we could buy a steam cleaner and do it ourselves - as well as clean the upholstered furniture in the den and our mattresses. Does anyone have a recommendation for a brand of steam cleaner ? So far we have looked at a Bissel and a Hoover at Target and were not able to make a decision.
