My daughter plans to carry a brooch bouquet made with vintage pins the ladies in the family have been collecting for her. Maybe the bridesmaids and her flower girl can carry books with the flowers. I need to see if I have a copy of Shakespeare's Sonnets.
Everything at my wedding was Shakespeare!

I've been looking around at my local antique mall and at our Friends of the Library sales. I plan to look at consignment shops and our local Salvation Army store. I was on my way out to another antique mall yesterday when the sub-zero weather interfered with my car's inclination to start. After we solve that issue, I will be hot on the trail for more lovely vintage books. Thanks, everyone, for sharing your ideas. I'll keep checking back!Probably just me but I sure wouldn't want any old books on my table where I'm going to eat...sorry, where have those books been? who previously owned them? where they sick? where were they stored? do they smell?
I would however consider making "old books", craft paper, cardboard, or even making new books old.
I'm just thinking, you're just shopping for these books for decorations, the books mean nothing since you didn't own them previously.
But again that's just me.....I would actually cringe at the table if something like that was in the center of the table.
So interesting how we're all different. I adore old books -- for their beautiful, rich, colorful bindings, lovely old print and illustrations, their content -- I just love books. I love it even more when I find old personal notes, pictures, pressed flowers, or other personal effects stuck into old books. They tell a story. Both DH and I gravitate to the book sections in thrift and secondhand stores and love book fairs, used book sales, and the like. We are always adopting and bringing home new volumes. I have a whole wall of bookshelves in my sitting room/study, and we have interesting and beautiful old books of many kinds stacked and lined up here, there, and everywhere around our home. Art books, poetry books, works of literature, old hymnals, theology books, cookbooks, decorating books, and for DH math, science, and engineering volumes galore. You name it, we've got it. Love old books.

Loopyloo, it's funny that you mentioned Bell, Book and Candle. That is kind of what started this whole theme. For Halloween, I did a centerpiece on my kitchen table with a stack of books, a battery candle and a brass bell, and called it my Bell, Book and Candle display. My daughter loved it and officially decided to make her wedding theme "Library."
I'll print out this thread and share it with my daughter. Awesome ideas! I'm so glad I came here and asked.
Oh, that's so funny Hetty! A kindred soul, you are! You've gotten so many good ideas and I know the wedding will be so special and lovely! Now I can't wait to hear all about it!

"Bell, Book and Candle" is a reference to the excommunication rite...........

This is the most brilliant idea for a wedding I've ever heard!

Desertdi, you are right. Last Halloween I googled bell, book and candle looking for information about the movie, came across the actual meaning and discovered it is part of the excommunication rite. Surprised me! Because of the movie, it is now associated with witchcraft. In the Good Witch series of movies on Hallmark Channel, Cassie's shop is called Bell, Book and Candle.
Thank you to all who have responded with your encouragement and wonderful ideas!
