Re: Kitchens with open shelving

It looks really fresh and clean. Much brighter. Personally, I don't mind some open shelves. I'm not a turquoise lover, but overall I like the change.

If a friend invited me over to see her new kitchen, and this was it, I would love it for her, because it is what she wanted.   I do like the brightness, the fact it's a little different, and I really like the display of the Pyrex collection.

However, the before kitchen is more my preferred style.  My contractor, and my cabinetmaker laughed at me when they drew up plans for my remodel, because I replaced base cabinet doors with full extend drawers as much as possible.   After 35 years of bending down trying to dig out stuff in the farthest corner of a cabinet, it just made sense to have deeper pot drawers that pull all the way out, giving full access to what's inside.   Even my silverware drawer is a custom 6" deep, which gives more room for storage, without shorting me on cabinet area sstorage underneath.

Once the contractor and cabinetmaker were done, they were very complimentary on my updates, and could see improved efficiency for my galley kitchen.

When I see a large kitchen full of base cabinets with doors, my mind sees wasted space that could have been improved with pot drawers.

My DH built and installed drawers in my pot cabinets last year and I agree , they are great.

I think drawers are so useful and the way of the future.  Before moving and when we were considering a kitchen renovation, we toured many design studios.  Drawers were featured for everything including dishes and dishwasher drawers.

My sister recently had many of her cabinets fitted with rollout shelves for ease of access.  Now my husband wants to do the same.

I don't like that remodel at all.  The floor still looks dated.

Displaying all that Pyrex just looks messy to me.

Where's the range Hood?  I find it's a necessary item to keep things tidy and clean.

I like the color turquoise, however I feel her choices are a bit too much for me.

For those of you that have more drawers, for things like pots, I have some questions.

Some day I fantasize about a kitchen remodel. I have tons of heavy stoneware and lots of pots and pans.

IT seems to me, that standard cabinets would give you the maximum storage space for these big and heavy items. It would seem that drawers would hold less weight and be more limiting in how much stuff you can fit in the same square footage.

What has been your experience with the differences?

I'd love to have the ease of the drawers, but I don't think they would hold the quantity or the weight of the things I store. I've considered the cabinets with the pull out shelves, but fear they won't hold the weight I would need to put on them either.

Can you really pack them with a lot of things, or do you have to minimize your choices and scale way back due to space and weight constraints?

I think scaling back would not be a bad thing for me, because my cabinets get so full, and are so awkward that half of what is in them doesn't get used on any kind of regular basis because it is just too hard to dig the stuff out.

So if you have had conventional cabinets and then lots of the drawers, can you break down the positive and negative of both?

Thanks!

Re: Kitchens with open shelving

No doubt about it the drawers themselves plus the hardware does use space in the cabinets so if your cabinets are crammed full you need to understand that. Also you can't have handles etc sticking out over the drawer or they won't slide. I had pared down my pots & pans when we moved to Florida so mine are not overly full and I can easily slide them in & out.

Re: Kitchens with open shelving

I think the remodel is an improvement, but I do think it was a project done on a limited budget.  I'm not crazy about either one, but the homeowner seems pleased with her project and that's all that really matters.

Re: Kitchens with open shelving

@Mominohio,

My cabinetmaker made my custom pot drawer bottoms "heavy duty", so they can hold more weight without sagging.   However, I would not load any pot drawer with multiple heavy cast iron pieces.

The pot drawers near my stove hold the most used pots, lids, and non stick skillets.  My cast iron skillets and oven broil pans are stored in the drawer of my stove.   My larger pots are stored in my new custom microwave cabinet which has a large storage area at the top behind double doors, microwave in the middle, and 3 full access shelves on the bottom behind double doors.

Again, I have a small galley kitchen, and found that base cabinets with doors are not convenient for me with full access to what gets pushed to the back corner.   All that stooping, bending, and stretching is relieved with a full access pot drawer.
