I had a contractor take my doors and drawers away to be painted. Then he added pulls and handles. I also got quartz countertops. The results are amazing. It looks like a new kitchen. I have a couple more things to be done and then I'm planning to post before and after pictures for anyone interested. I'm soooooo glad I did it.

Hi Epicurean--I'm inclined to agree with ID2. I will say that if you should decide to go the refacing route, be sure and compare prices. Particularly if the kitchen is not too big, the cost for new cabinetry can actually be about the same! Also, at our age (I'm the same!) even though we may not anticipate selling, should this be the case within the next ten years, you will get a far better return on a kitchen that is all newer. The cabinets will look fine repainted, but for example a cathedral (arch) style door will look dated nonetheless, in contrast to all the other new elements. My friend found this very situation--she replaced her counter, backsplash, appliances, floor, but didn't replace the cabs and she does regret it, because due to her husband's current health she will now be selling her place. Just something to think about (even though, who wants to?! I hear you about the vacations!!)

On 4/7/2015 Epicurean said: after reading all your replays, will think about painting the cabinets. like I said, it's not about money, just about what we want to spend it on. at 70, I'd rather spend it on vacations!!!,
That does seem like a good decision. So many times I ask myself if the function is still there, do I really need to replace something. Just spiffing up your cabinets may be all that is needed.

Epic- we just put our house on the market and my cabinets sounded like yours and the home stager turned me on to Watco Danish Oil believe I got from amazon or ebay check both, all you do is wash cabinets down to remove oil and dirt and wipe that stuff on "no sanding"! my cabinets look better than new the realtors and home stagers around here swear by that stuff I can't say enough good about it my cabinets had steam damage from the stove or by the sink where we rub against all the time and that stuff did miracles.

Our cabinets are from the 60's. We plan to paint them with Annie Sloan paint. Check out the website. There are MANY tutorials on how to do this. I have friends who have painted many different pieces with this paint and it looks wonderful. Another friend just had her cabs painted with it and they were really cheap ones compared to mine. They look really nice. Good luck.

Painting dated wood cabinets white and getting new knobs would make a huge difference in your kitchen.
