On a segment of our local news the other day, they showed how to maintain your drains once you've unclogged them. Pour a half cup of baking soda, then a half cup of vinegar (looked like white vinegar) down into drain. Chase that with boiling water. It helps keep the drain fresh, too.
Alao, a plumber told my neighbor the best thing to do for a clogged drain is to use straight boiling water. I saw the news segment after she had told me this.
I did the baking soda/vinegar solution in the kitchen with the garbage disposal and our shower. I even threw baking soda and vinegar in our dishwasher. They all smalled much better after that. For our disposal, I've used orange peels to freshen.
