It is such a shame that oak cabinets went out of style - they are so pretty IMO. Anyway - i have maple cabinets and thought the oak ones in my previous home were much better. It is no surprize to anyone I'm sure that the building and fashion industry just work round the clock to ,make us all feel our homes aren't up to standard so they can make you want to get rid of the outdated and buy buy buy. It is all a big scam to separate us from our $$$$. I am also just as certain that is the entire reason HGTV exists in the first place. To assure that we all are told often how outdated we are so we go run out to buy all new everything.

That is absolutely not true. Evolving and changing are part of life. Innovations in materials, finishes and features also necessitate changes in design. Design and style are reflective of the times. Otherwise you would still be wearing a long bustle skirt, and your kitchen wouldn't have any cabinets at all, oak or otherwise!

And I guess I disagree with you... To be sure change is inevitable, but I absolutely believe pertinent industries very much help to determine trends and I also very much believe they have a vested interest in ensuring things change substantially... Clearly, business survives based on making money and one way to make money is to encourage homeowners to update and buy new... All that said, I so do NOT lament not having oak cabinets... I liked oak for a year or two when I was a teenager. With precious few exceptions, haven't much liked it since.

And I respectfully agree to disagree! Of course, business survives by making money, and America runs on the housing industry, with more employment than in any other field. But change is consumer driven. It's the yin and yang of humanity. We are creatures of habit, and yet we crave change, something new and different. So it has been for centuries, in home decor, fashion, style. In our little corner of the housing industry (our family business of nearly eighty years) customers don't update every five or ten years, more like every twenty or thirty! So when they come into our showroom, we offer something for everyone, including a small sampling of oak. No one buys it.

ETA--I couldn't agree more about HGTV--don't use them as a benchmark! They are so far removed from their original concept with their bogus, scripted shows that they have lost all credibility to me! I can't remember the last time I actually took inspiration from any of their programs. HGTV is brought to you by the words granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and open concept!

Re: Is my decor out dated or what?

I'm liking the geometric Moroccan print look. Wander through any dept. store, check out the bedding and shower curtains. That's what I would put on a wall if I wanted to stick with wallpaper. Accents, not the whole room. On Flip or Flop, they have used some of this new wallpaper and it looks sharp and updated.

Then maybe we can agree it's a two way street. To be sure, we're motivated to renovate, redecorate, or even to move from time to time, and the market may well be driven, at least to some extent, by market research that points out what we might be interested in obtaining... I do believe though, that the impetus to perform market research, to create new and different and to revise existing products is not solely consumer driven, but is also a function of businesses needing to enhance the market for what they're selling... Either way, I'm not surprised oak isn't currently a hot property!

As for HGTV, it's been the fodder for much discussion on various of these forums and it seems the consensus is that it really is a shame what it has devolved into... They used to do some fun and more innovative shows, but now it's just a steady diet of Property Brothers, Love it or List it, various versions of House Hunters and of their rehab or 'flip' flavor of the month. Moreover, when they do feature any decorating as part of this steady diet, it tends to all look the same, with the possible exception of some of the rooms Hillary, from the original Love it or List it, (the second version is unwatchable..., the original version almost so...) comes up with, you know, once the mandatory obstacle is encountered that ensures she can't really do what she wants to do...

I did enjoy the various shows that Sarah Richardson used to have, along with a number of others, but it appears there's nothing new in the pipeline...

Nice chatting with you...

I was watching a décor show on TV, and foiled wallpapers are back. Olive greens, etc. In more traditional patterns.

Good grief, tell me no!!! I am NEVER having anything olive green, or foil or flocked wallpapers again!!!

Sure I can't interest you in a few dozen rolls of this?

Hahaha, that wallpaper looks familiar to me!! NEVER AGAIN!!!

Re: Is my decor out dated or what?

My problem is that I take good enough care of things so that I can't justify replacing them. My house was built in 2000, but the furnishings are 1980's.

Re: Is my decor out dated or what?

I've been framed: I like that leaf faux finishing idea! Tonal would be nice. (Yes, according to that TV decorating segment/episode, traditional foils are supposedly back. Maybe in lighter, tonal patterns, etc. in traditional homes/settings. From what I recall, they looked quite nice, placed on several display walls.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

I am a big fan of Sarah Richardson. Candice Olson too. I wish I could post pictures, but I dont know how. I am pretty sure I am going with the light blues and gray colors. I have had so much fun reading all of the posts. I guess I really need a change.

A two way street! I'll buy that!{#emotions_dlg.laugh}

I know! It's so true--that 'Love It or List It' is so formulaic and predictable! Oy! Hillary does have some good ideas--forget those other two, they're so dippy--and every now and then I get a good idea from Scott McGillivray on 'Income Property', or even 'Property Brothers', occasionally. But they're few and far between, and there's not much that's instructional. And save me from the rehabbers and flippers! Hands down, my favorite was Sarah Richardson, too--what a fabulous designer! And the great thing was that you really got to see the design process as it unfolded. Candice Olson did that to a great extent, too. I say bring back Sarah Richardson!!

Nice chatting with you, too!{#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

Re: Is my decor out dated or what?

I imagine the issue with the Sara Richardson shows was cost. They would have to purchase a large house to start with. Then she did an extrodinary amount of rehab before even starting to decorate.Then, she rarely followed the HGTV formula - she used a lot of antiques and rehabbed them - she didn't go out and buy everything new. It seems that HGTV's newest mode is to use someone else's money to do the rehabbing - ieSmiley Tongueroperty brothers or love it or list it.

Just as so many others I loved watching Sara Richardson, Candace Olson and other design shows.Now the only show that really holds my interest is Rehab addict,and I don't really like the star but i do enjoy the show.

I have wallpaper. If the so called experts don't like it, that is their problem. I like my home. End of story.
