Re: If you could retire anywhere in the USA

Hmmm, Roni, careful how you word things. It sounds like you're suggesting that non-Republicans don't work or pay taxes.

We've lived in Wash., Colorado, Arizona,Southeast Asia, California,Utah, and Idaho. Hoping to be retired in two years, we are considering St. George Utah, but we do love the northern Idaho panhandle where we are right now, except for the long winter.

We are thinking about this now. We don't want a conservative state run by republicans so many states have been crossed off our list.

Hard to believe someone can be so close minded and misinformed. Have fun in your liberal state with your corrupt politicians.

right---but did you read all her other posts...

Since you seem to hate Republicans...I suggest that you find a wonderful Democrat controlled state....it will have HIGH taxes, it will have self-destructed large cities (i.e. Detroit) due to all of the hand outs to people who have chosen to never work a day in their life. so....avoid FL, TX, NV, TN, - they're definitely not in step with your mindset. (remember...YOU started this by making snide remarks about Republicans ---the people who work and pay taxes - and believe in a ''hand-up'' rather than a ''hand-out'')

Re: If you could retire anywhere in the USA

I read this thread last evening but, have just now had the chance to get on and post as I stay quite busy in my nearly 10 years of retirement.

We spend half of the year in Il. (both parties have ruined our state so, I don't care to get into that debate). The other half in Az. I was fortunate enough to marry a man who is 7 years older than myself thus, affording me the opportunity to retire at 53 years of age. My dad is alive and in Illinois. That is our ONLY tie to that Godforsaken mess of a state, weather-wise as well as pension worries. However, in talking with our neighbors from all over the U.S., they ALL have pension concerns.

Our goal is to move to Az. full time. Sure, it gets hot in the S.E. Valley but we can get in the car and drive 3 hours for an entirely different change of scenery. We can rent a place for the summer months. The states most certainly has lakes for those who like the water.

Our Illinois pension is currently not taxed but our property taxes are sky high. It costs more in Az. to own a car with the outrageous licensing fees. So...like we tell those who ask, put pen to paper and do the math to see what works for you. I can say without a doubt, we could never afford in Illinois the home we have here in Az. We are in Del Webb community and we absolutely love it. Most of us to not discuss politics here because we have better things to do. Their kids are raised and sunshine, golf and other activities are the priority.

Oh, and for those who don't care for snowbirds....you all should thank your lucky stars our tax dollars keep these states afloat. Think about that when you're cussing us out for heavy traffic.

WOAH, Roni slow down. I have spent my entire life in Detroit and yes there are problems but they are much more complex than you state. For instance, the economy was not diversified, just automotive, second may jobs were outsourced to other countries (corporate greed) and the rise and popularity of cars not manufactured in the Detroit area hurt sales. Corporate America has hurt Detroit as much as people looking for handouts.

And then there is the union/nonunion issues, the loss of skilled trades to robotics and a myriad of other factors. Politics...maybe a little but many parties have come and gone during this time. I have lived it...but must state that Detroit is on the rebound...slow but sure. And the rest of the state is beautiful.

I am sorry to pollute a nice thread by getting into this but I just could not let this go by.

Re: If you could retire anywhere in the USA

We are retired and we are staying right here in Iowa. We are fortunate that our only son and his family live in our community. We might consider moving somewhere warm if they ever move away. But for now, I love the size of our small city, having four distinct seasons, and our simple lifestyle. We have a two story home and I anticipate that we may need to move to a ranch style home as we age.

The downside is that our small city lacks good airline service and specialty medical care. We have to drive 90 miles for those things.

We retired to our home town. Got transfer to GA and when retirement came we went back home to Nebraska. Taxes are high here, but we have many friends.
