Re: If You Have a More Formal Room, Do You Use It?

Builders and designers (at least here) are opting for open floor plans and multi-functional

spaces.....

We have a living room and a dining room. The living room is not used as we have a family room. The dining room is used for our family. I prefer my kitchen to eat in.

There are no "formal" areas in my house.  In quotes because to me formal means dressy.  I'm not sure if we're all on the same page about that.

To me "more formal" means nicer, not the everyday hang-out eat cake place.  The room where the furniture is the nicest, the room is kept free from mail and trash, things aren't lying around.

The room where you escort guests or go yourself to get away from any clutter or things you need to tidy up! Woman Very Happy  Doesn't have to be "fancy" but nicer and kept nicer.  No glasses sitting around, etc.

Re: If You Have a More Formal Room, Do You Use It?

My place is also very small so I only have one living/family room and no dining room.

Growing up we had a living/family room and right next to it was another living room that was more formal.  However, it was RARELY used.  I probably used that room more than anyone because I could spread out my Barbies w/out making a mess in the less formal room.  My bedroom was upstairs and I wanted to be down with everyone else.

Re: If You Have a More Formal Room, Do You Use It?

I have a very small front room that is decorated like a library.   It is a lovely place to sit in the morning and enjoy my coffee in the sunshine.   It is also the perfect place for a tall Christmas tree with it's 12 foot ceilings and chandelier.

The adjacent dining room is small, but is a nice place to decorate.  It is really only used for holiday dinners.
