It is worth seeing what's under existing flooring and if it is hardwood, having it redone. If not and if it's just plywood, consider the same configuration you have only continuing the laminate/vinyl 'wood' up the stairs and then covering with a stair runner that is more easily and less expensively replaced. Ceramic is pretty, but it wouldn't be my choice. As for carpet, I only like it in bedrooms.

Thank you.. Do you think it would be expensive to do that on the stairs?

Re: I need new flooring/carpeting, can you all help?

hope I can help. in 16 years in my kitchen the builder did linoleum hated it, thin and cold on feet! so we did tile on floor next, hated that! was a pain to clean grout, drop something it shattered in pieces, if wet was very slick! change tile to laminate hated that! laminate chipped on several planks! next did vinyl planking do not do this! if vinyl planking is light stain the stain will wear off the planking and being near a dishwasher or sink the vinyl planking will start to raise up and will not interlock into next plank. we just did bamboo floor in kitchen and love it! it harder then hard wood and it is used for wet environments like the kitchen good luck!

Re: I need new flooring/carpeting, can you all help?

We have carpeting in the living room, dining room & family room...all need to be replaced. I like the idea of the vinyl planks but we may be selling a few years down the road and DH wants to put hardwood in the family room to start. Then we'll do the living room & dining room.

The kitchen has ceramic tile that is a pain to clean but looks good so it will stay. I was always hesitant about putting wood in the kitchen because of water spills and our sloppy dog. Even with a large mat under her water bowl there is always a pool of water on the floor after a drink. I didn't realize that bamboo was water resistant. Good to know!

I am currently enamored of vinyl wood plank flooring - it really looks like wood with the ease of caring for vinyl. We are looking to take up some carpet in our back hallway and replace it with vinyl woodplank. I think it is trendy right now to have the same flooring throughout, but that is certainly not a rule.

Another option , but much more pricey, is the porcelain tile that looks like wood. It is beautiful, however, it is a hard surface to walk on and it is expensive. They just took up the wood floors in our church that had seen better days and replaced them with the porcelain tiles that mimic wood.

I have four dogs and this vinyl planking is what I'd strongly consider. It's indistinguishable from hardwood. It would be so easy to care for.

I just had my contractor install vinyl wood planks in my living room and kitchen. Everyone who comes to my house comments on how beautiful it looks. It does look exactly like wood with knots like you would see in real wood. So easy to take care of and the absolute best choice if you have animals. I sent for samples online and found IFloors to be the most reasonable and extremely helpful. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Avoid Home Depot. We had THE most horrendous experience with them re: carpet laying.

Maybe that's already a widely-known fact - I don't know. But I do know that I wish I knew it before that nightmare experience.
