I need new flooring/carpeting, can you all help?

Good Morning.

I need to replace my first floor flooring, 3 rooms, living room, kitchen, and dining room. Right now I have laminate in the LR & DR, and linoleum in the kitchen. I like the break up of laminate to the linoleum.. Would you keep it the same way or are there other suggestions that you have?

Then from the steps that go upstairs and the bedrooms and hallway, are all carpeted. My cats love to sharpen their paws on the carpet and it looks terrible. I would hate to replace with new carpeting again if they do that. Any suggestions of what I can do?

Thank you....

I am currently enamored of vinyl wood plank flooring - it really looks like wood with the ease of caring for vinyl. We are looking to take up some carpet in our back hallway and replace it with vinyl woodplank. I think it is trendy right now to have the same flooring throughout, but that is certainly not a rule.

Another option , but much more pricey, is the porcelain tile that looks like wood. It is beautiful, however, it is a hard surface to walk on and it is expensive. They just took up the wood floors in our church that had seen better days and replaced them with the porcelain tiles that mimic wood.

What is underneath your laminate? Is it the original hardwood? Same for your stairs, hallway and upstairs.

I'd pull up all that carpet and have the hardwoods redone. They will look beautiful. No matter how bad they look now, it's amazing what they will look like.

If you pull up the carpet yourself and tap out the tack boards that hold it down, you've just saved yourself some money.

And if you want to keep costs down as far as the kitchen go for the wood-like plank floor mentioned by Happy Housewife for the kitchen or even just a thick linoleum.

You will have just upgraded your house and it's something you can enjoy. Hardwoods are very beautiful. You won't be able to stop staring at them!

I have ceramic tile that looks like wood planks. It's 6 X 48. I love them, very easy to care for, very modern looking, and I love the look. The only downside is if you drop something, it will shatter. LOL

In my basement, I have the vinyl plank. Again, it's a terrific product and it's super easy to care for.

I wasn't sure about having dark floors, but I have no complaints.

I do prefer having stairs and bedrooms carpeted.

There are so many flooring options out there for all budgets and looks. Look online or go to a flooring store to get ideas.

brii - I would get that floor in a flash but my DH has neuropathy in his feet and it hurts him to walk on hard floors so we are going with the vinyl wood plank. We have that in our camper and it is great - they lay foam under it to give it some extra softness. ( they actually do it as a moisture barrier but it makes the floor have some give to it.)

HH, I love the vinyl flooring. I am very happy with it. We had extra and I put it in my walk-in closet.

I think it's perfect for an entryway too.

It is worth seeing what's under existing flooring and if it is hardwood, having it redone. If not and if it's just plywood, consider the same configuration you have only continuing the laminate/vinyl 'wood' up the stairs and then covering with a stair runner that is more easily and less expensively replaced. Ceramic is pretty, but it wouldn't be my choice. As for carpet, I only like it in bedrooms.

I think I'd keep it the same, but get an updated pattern. My cats did a number on my carpet too, but I'm holding off doing something for now.

My house was built in 1998, I am just about positive there is just floorboard under the carpet.. I appreciate the thought, it would have been nice.. I just got a new fridge and over the stove microwave.. Next in the appliances will be a new stove and dishwasher.

But I am trying to do things and the flooring is very much needed..

I appreciate all your help...

I wonder if there is something out there, that is say, cat resistant, if they claw at it, it would be bad to the carpet.. I'll have to look and see what's out there.. Thank you.
