Re: Husbands and Their Decorating Input ??

My husband says he doesn’t care about decorating.  Interestingly, though, he does like it when people compliment us on how our house is decorated!  In the end, he doesn’t really care about the details but he likes the final product.  If there is something that he really dislikes, I will not do it.  It’s his house too!  The one thing I really pay attention to is his comfort.  He has had major back surgery as well as two knee replacements.  We have been updating the furniture in our living room and I made sure that our choices reflected comfort as well as aesthetics.  If furniture looks good but is uncomfortable what’s the point?  I like to think that our home reflects both of us.

Re: Husbands and Their Decorating Input ??

Absolutely, his input is to say "yes, ma'am"  and to ask how high should he put the nail to hang a picture I picked out.

IF he "decorated" it would be a deer head in the living room and maybe a calendar in the kitchen for decoration.  Only input on furniture is if it's comfy enough to lay down on with a nice arm rest that will hold a pillow on to watch TV.  UGH!  He is fine with whatever I do and he can have the basement/garage.  Everything in those two spaces gets just hung on a nail on the wall so he can find it LOL! (roll of masking tape?  put a nail in the wall and hang 'er up!)

My dh and I are great decorators together! I wouldn't dare pick out anything without him. He has such a good eye. I'm very fortunate that he has the same style as me. Heart

Re: Husbands and Their Decorating Input ??

I always ask my husband’s opinion after I have given it to him. 40+ years of marriage and it works like a charm!

OK, seriously, he is usually pleased with my decisions regarding decorating, and on the very few things he’s felt very strongly about, he’s been right, so I guess I’m just lucky.  We sure do argue about plenty of other stuff though!

Re: Husbands and Their Decorating Input ??

He has little interest in decorating. With him, the TV is the focal point of the room! Thankfully, he does notice things and always says any changes I make look nice.

How much input goes my husband have?

Zip. Nada. Diddly.

Why? Because he doesn't care. You could do nothing, sleep on the floor, eat off crates and he would be fine with that. His outlook is "does it serve a purpose and is the cost worth it?" Many a battle we have had over purchasing items for our home, let me tell ya. I WISH he had interest but...he doesn't. Same with his brothers, same with our sons.

@SahmIam . My husband is the same way...they must be brothers.  Is he an engineer?  They are so very "practical".

I often wonder what the house would look like if I was no longer around...more like a guy's college apartment.

@haddon9 LOL! His first degree: double major in CS and Engineering!!  And yes, a college dorm is EXACTLY what it would be. He had a fit the first time I purchased drapery rods. Why?  "You can just use a staple gun and staple them to the wall!!" Oh, and a white bed sheet is just as good as any curtain/drape.

Brilliant mind but OMG....lol.

@SahmIam  Too funny! Smiley Happy...but still frustrating to live with!

Re: Husbands and Their Decorating Input ??

Interesting thread and comments. My DH is engineer and always looking at functionality. Good and bad tobtgat, but I usually agree with his reasoning. I long to be bold and hang pictures like in magazines but out walls pretty bare. He likes to hang pictures high 😟.
Wanting to redo kitchen and he has nixed pull out microwave. He has a point....how do you clean the splatters well without crawling down and looking up? Any comments on Experience?

Re: Husbands and Their Decorating Input ??

My husband is always concerned with functionality. He won't tolerate furniture that sacrifices comfort for aesthetics.  Other than that, he lets me make final decisions on decorating, though I do take into account the fact that he's a man and wouldn't feel at home in an atmosphere that was too feminine. If I lived alone I would have a very "girlie" house.  If I ever get one room for myself, I'm going to have my way with it!

Oh Ms. Persiflage --- YOU got a WINNER....I wish my husband was like yours...I made the mistake ...... of telling him he could decorate the living room.....WHAT was i THINKING... even asking for his input...now...he thinks he is a decorator and wow....some of his choices are not that great....So I just add things around his to soften the effect.
