At over $100 an hour, I have NEVER had a painter not show up- ever.  In our area painters are well paid and not flighty or flaky.

A little early would be fine with me, but 40 mins. is a bit much, IMO, for a job scheduled to begin at 8AM.  It's not that I wouldn't be up, but people in the house have a morning routine.  It would be embarrassing for a worker to show up and the homeowner still be in the shower or in their jammies.  As a homeowner who has a dog, I'd like to be able to feed him and get him out for his morning routine before any workers show up.  Otherwise it turns into a bunch of monkey business with him wanting to make new friends.  That said, if a worker did show up earlier than I/we preferred, I suppose we'd adjust on the fly and make the best of it rather than tell him to leave and come back.

This exactly, especially the dogs.  We like to feed them and get them walked and situated or even crated depending on the work being done and their safety.  30-40 mins early creates a unnecessay circus.

Also how late is too late? I had a contractor show up at 10PM once to "check on the work the guys did that day". Holy Cow - I was walking around in my nightgown, I was home alone and he didn't knock or ring the bell, just let himself in with the key we had given him for the guys to get in to work in the house when we were at work. He scared me to death and really ticked me off. I demanded the key back right then and told him when I go to work the back door will be unlocked for the workers. Shortly after that we fired him anyway for other infractions and sued him as well.

While it is very inconvienent for him to show up when you are not ready and ahead of schedule count your blessings!! Through the years we have learned a lot about contractor time and honey it is not real time. Just be glad he showed up early and on the right day. I know it is annoying for sure and I understand how you feel but at least you will be getting the job done!!

Sounds a bit lazy and diva  to me...... someone is ready, willing and able and to get to work for you and your complaining.  He is not getting paid by the hour arriving early.  Did you want him to sit on the street or be late. If he is a lousy person he should have not been hired.

You should be ready for at least an hour ahead of time.

I learned the hard way to never pay anyone by the hour. I want in writing the total cost of the job. I once had a contractor who I was paying by the hour, and in the middle of the day - when he thought I was at work - I had reason to go to a local hotel and - lo & behold - there was my contractor with a woman.I asked the desk clerk for his room number and went & banged on the door , when he opened it I really ripped him a new one! That night my DH called him and fired him and we sued him. He actually brought the girlfriend (he was married) to court to testify that I was a crazy person at that hotel that day and our lawyer got her to admit that they had had many liasons while he was supposed to be at my house working and was being paid by me. In the end he had to return everything we had paid him AND pay me damages for emotional distress. Also, the local community newspaper printed an article about the trial so that pretty much put him out of business.

Re: How early is too early?

As long as I'm dressed, I really don't mind but if I have errands to run and have planned my day around them, don't show up in the morning for an afternoon appointment and vice versa.

In my experience, 'professional' tradesmen are a vanishing breed. Most of those performing services these days don't bring with them the skills, the professionalism or the work ethic of those who worked in the service industries in days gone by. Of course, they now expect the customer to accommodate them and to be paid like they have advanced degrees...

This thread reminded me of a time that I took off work and waited ALL DAY for someone to show up, and he NEVER showed up.  I was really p*ssed.  I wasted a day off waiting for him.  He did eventually come another day to do the job, but, I could not believe how inconsiderate some people could be.
