I use place mats.  My farmhouse table has two drawers in it.  I store my placemats in those drawers.

Sounds like my dining room table. Ours also has tons of paperwork and laptop. When we got the table we had someone come out and measure for table pads. I am so glad we did.

 

The first dinner I had with guests, two people spilled gravy on the table and chairs. The table is still looking good. I was never able to get the stains off the upholstered seats.
