My everday table is 60" round and antique pine, so I ordered a crystal clear plastic fitted table cloth with elastic all around. It fits snug over the table and the elastic is underneath so you don't see it. I then put placemats on top of that, and little trivets for hot things. The plastic is such good quality that it looks like the table has a high polish.

Placemats, only. I can no longer handle the spilled wine, cranberry, stuffing, dressing and candle wax on my beautiful tablecloths. And then there's the ironing!

My everyday table has a story. It came from a large estate. My late brother worked for a newspaper right after he graduated from college. The part of the city he covered had all of the antique shops. He wanted this table, but the store owner had hoped to keep the huge set together. Finally she told him he could have the table and the chairs.
My mom refinished furniture as a hobby, so he knew she would fix it up. She worked on the top, but the legs were a problem. She took it to an expert she knew. He's the one who told her it was from England- 19th century.
She was working on the chairs when my brother died. The table went home to my mom's. Soon after she asked if we wanted it. We already had a dining table, but Mom said it could be our kitchen table, if we took the leaves out. We didn't have any children yet, but we were hoping. I told her it probably wasn't a great idea. But she said she would put a clear coat on it that I could clean with a damp cloth. It's been with me ever since and it still looks great. It's been a game table, a homework table, and a work table.
I have used plastic or cloth placemats all along. I change seasonally. ![]()

I always use place mats for every meal. I change them out for every season so it makes it kind of festive. But growing up my Mom had one of those heavy duty pads on her table and it looked absolutely beautiful for 50 years.

I usually use cloth placemats. Christmas gets a table cloth.

Hard custom made table protective covers. The table is a catchall so they are on all the time for convience. We only eat at the dinning table once or twice a year, mostly it holds the laundry waiting to be folded.

I have clear plastic over pretty tablecloths on both my dining room table and kitchen table. I purchased the clear plastic at Jo Anns fabric store and had it cut and measure to fit the table. I put whatever on the tables for dining or accessories and it always wipes up nicely and has no imprints and it was inexpensive. The nicest thing is that it does not look like plastic, just a tablecloth.

Our dining table also came from an estate sale in 1989 . We had it redone . We had a glass top especially made and that has served the purpose . The set came with six chairs a buffet and a hutch all in cherry wood all redone. It is elegant and beautiful and I love it all .

My dining table is such an odd size that I can't find a table cloth that would fit it properly.
I have changed the table top color 3 times in 3 years (lime-ish yellow, melon color, now a french linen grey) with Chalk paint and always protect it with their wax. I do use placemats (actually they are tea towels that are prettier than any placemat I could ever find).
I had a beautiful cherry dining table that looked like glass on top it was so shiny in a Queen Anne stye years ago. I had a table pad made to protect it and always kept that on it. Only took it off when the house was being shown.

We have only one table for eating as the kitchen isn't large enough for eat in, it is in the dining room.
Because of that, it is an all wood table, and I keep custom made table pads on it, and a somewhat elegant table cloth.
We eat on it every day, and for casual meals, I put placemats that coordinate over the table cloth.
The cloth is by Heritage Lace (made in USA!!!!), and launders very well, releases stains well, so no issues with having it fancy, but using it daily.
