Start with furniture you love, next flooring, paint color and accessories. Hope you have a great time!

@barb40I'm right there with you -  so much to think about, so many choices.

I'm going to spend a few hours at a home show tomorrow, hoping I get a better sense of currently available products and colors than I have now. I have some time because this is high season in southern Florida and lots of contractors and even handymen are beyond busy.

For me, this is not a DIY project.  Except for moving lightweight objects out of the workers' way, I'm just the chooser and the payer.  That's the way it has to be.

Re: Home Re-Decorating...

@barb40  Did you know that Pottery Barn has a free decorating service?  It is actually called Free Design Service and they will come to your home.  It does not hurt to read about.  I am sure you have a budget.  PB always has some kind of sale going on with 30% furniture, etc.  Good luck.

@barb40  There are as many 'rules' about where to start as there are decorating aficionados... My rule of thumb on those rare occasions when someone is able to 'start from scratch' has been to start with those elements that are most 'fixed', such as carpets and furniture. These are the things, due to cost, that most folks can't change up on a whim, For most of us they have to last for at least several years... Things like curtains, throw pillows and paint, while not always inexpensive, are usually less costly to update from time to time. Some people opt to first develop a 'color scheme' but I've found that we tend to select rugs and furniture in colors that appeal to us and then a color scheme can be developed around them and that this works better than setting a color scheme and then trying to find things to fit within it. Of course, if one is able to afford custom design then virtually any rug or piece of furniture can be crafted to meet one's specific desires, but most people can't pursue that luxury, While many stores do offer a design service, keep in mind that these designers are also sales people and you will most likely be wedded to selecting the bulk of your purchases from their store.

Pottery Barn decorating service was a bust for us.  My DD tried to use them last year.  Scheduling was a nightmare.  When someone finally showed up they were not very helpful.  Said they would come up with ideas, colors, etc. and get back to her.  They never did.

@barb40    Since you are planning a large renovation project you may want to consider hiring an interior decorator.  We updated our living room and entryway several years ago and our interior decorator helped us with flooring, furniture (both new and old) and all aspects of our remodel.  We wanted to keep some of our treasured pieces.  The final decisions were ours but she was a tremendous help in coordinating the renovation in terms of colors, furniture placement, type of flooring, etc.  It was well worth the money spent, and the final outcome was beautiful.
