For the first time in many years, I have a large flat topped china closet. I'd like to display something on top- traditional and cozy.

I have some carnival glass, some pitchers, a couple pedestal glass and ceramic cake plates......

This is NOT my strong suit so I'd love some suggestions.

You can have such fun decorating the top of your china cabinet.  My hutch is 49 years old, yes it actually was made in the dreaded 60's!  And I love it!   I bought it shortly after we were married and I've never grown tired of it.  It's early American from Ethan Allen and it looks wonderful in my greatroom.   I don't know what style I'd call my decorating but it works and looks fine for me.   I have nothing early American in the entire home but that hutch and it fits right in.  My home is definitely not matchy-matchy, that's for sure.

Enjoy your new piece of furniture and I bet it's a wonderful addition to your home, violann!

I have a beautiful, large china cabinet that I have had since the 70s and love it.  I placed a basket of greenery, I think it is faux IVY, and it looks great.

@violann

You could always do artwork, and stack it so that it leans against the wall, or something like this-

I sold mine, but I had thought to paint it~ like the one at Ethan Allen (soft gray, hinges and all) and store books and shells on the shelf. So if you don't have a dinning room you can take that formal china cabinet, paint it, and decorate w/artifacts instead of china!

Anyone who thinks china hutches have become extinct should see the Ethan Allen catalog of "new" furniture items I received recently.

Or any home magazine, any good furniture store's sales floor, about a bazillion pinterest pictures, and a slew of facebook group pages on home decor.

Well color me old and outdated (with pride) because I have my mother's hutch like so many of the rest of you, and I would never part with it either, until I have to live somewhere that it will no longer fit in a room.

I see so many hutches (which are slightly different than a true china cabinet/closet) online that if I had the space, I'd own multiples. I find them not only appealing to look at, but functional storage space if well utilized as well.

Those that don't have access to genuine Amish made furniture stores would absolutely drool at the lovely creations to be found in those stores. So many styles, and such beautiful wood with such satin finishes. I call it 'hutch heaven'!
