Re: Help!! Stinky Kitchen Sink

The gasket in my 2-3 year old Insinkerator Evolution Compact comes out, but the older one it replaced did not.

Thanks for that info.  I think I'm just going to resign myself that mine doesn't come out.  I figure that if it did, I would have been able to detect that by now.  It's probably that it must be an older model.

I'll say this - it works great in the over 15 years since we bought this house. No idea how old it is, but one of the previous owners updated the kitchen so it was probably installed at that point.

I have had a couple of times when it seemed dead but my husband got me that little tool.  You have to get down there and put it in the place on the bottom of the unit and turn it, then everything works fine.

I really don't put an excessive amount of stuff in mine, though, but I do probably turn it on at least once a day.

CB, I discovered that the gasket came out on mine by accident when I was cleaning the underside of it with a long dish brush & pulled it out as I was scrubbing.  I thought I'd broken it, because I'd never seen one with a removeable gasket before.

Re: Help!! Stinky Kitchen Sink

Thanks to everyone who responded with such great advice.  I cleaned the drain with one of those brushes made for drains and you wouldn't belive the black yuck that came out.  Once it was pretty clean, I poured baking soda and white vinegar down and it foamed up.  It seems to have helped with the horrible odor but as one poster stated, it's probably time for a new disposal.  Thanks, again, everybody.    docsgirl
