@halfpint1,

I have never had cats inside my home, but my brother across the road has 4 inside cats.   Any loud noise inside that house, and those 4 cats go into hiding for hours.   One of the cats disappeared for 2 days when new flooring was put down, and my sister-in-law was sure he ran out an open door unnoticed.  Once the flooring was down and the house was quiet again, the cat simply came out of hiding.

If the noise you hear is loud enough to bother you as bad as you say, your cats should be nervous, hiding and never coming out to socialize with you.   However, the things you say about your cats seem to indicate they are very happy and content, and like to be near you when you’re sitting down.   I’ve just never known a cat to be content in a loud environment.

I continue to think your noise is based on fear; you were blessed to have a husband who provided for you, and took care of everything around the house.   I have a feeling he just did what needed to be done, and didn’t bother you with details.  When he died, it has surely been overwhelming to realize it’s all on you now to recognize when something is wrong and get it fixed.

In my 45 years of experience as a homeowner, I assure you that nothing electrical related; no furnace, no refrigerator, no freezer, no stove, no fluorescent light fixture, etc., ever kept working for 3 solid years once it made that first giveaway sound to alert me there was a problem.

Are you truly aware of the fact this noise has been going on for 3 full years?   My fear is that you are in denial about what’s really going on.
