The heat is not on but the noise is. I am trying to remember when it exactly started. Techs can't hear it or they are not here when it comes on.

Surely this heater runs when your son Bob is in the house, and yet in the course of the last 3 years, he’s never heard what you hear.

The 7 or 8 repairmen who have been paid to check it out don’t hear anything.

I do not remember you ever mentioning this sound during the daytime, it always starts around dusk, and dark.

@halfpint1 -

A heat pump not only regulates heat but also the air conditioning and fans I guess.-it moves the air back and forth from in and out of the house.

I hear mine mostly at night because there are no other outside noises like there are during the day.

It isn't on all the time, but when it is I wonder what the heck is that?

I think if this is the noise you are hearing, it unfortunately is the normal operating sound of these. I think others have suggested a sound machine which you can order online for $20 at Bed Bath and Beyond or other stores, or if you can stand them, ear plugs,

or just know that it is a normal sound and try to get used to it and not let it bother you.

You can at least know that everyting is working properly and humming along!

@RedTop

Yes, the OP has been posting about hearing 'noises' for quite a while now and her son and other maintenance people don't hear anything.

Her son won't even come over anymore to investigate these 'noises' and he lives nearby, according to her posts.

Many have suggested that she see a medical professional about these sounds she hears, but maybe she hasn't.

I say this with the utmost respect and concern for the OP.

You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.

I am going to call back the company that sold it. No I never heard it when dh was alive for I think something would have been done. Thanks for the idea of a heat pump. They called last week about a tune up but I wasn't feeling good and all last week it was raining and the unit is on the roof.--thank you.

You have already had MANY inspections of both the air conditioning and heating units.  Not one person heard the noise.  Your son can not hear the noise.

It it is time to consider something else.
