Re: Has your home decor preferences changed drastically overtime?

In my condo that I lived in for nine years, my colors were warm...greens, yellows/golden colors. Also a cottage theme.

When I moved into this house a year and a half ago, I completely changed. My colors are cool neutrals...greys, taupes, seafoam. My furniture is grey with seafoam and teal accents. More of a,modern, streamlined feel.

I like to change up every ten years or so.

Re: Has your home decor preferences changed drastically overtime?

When I was in my 20's, everything was on trend. First condo I purchased was a tri-level with a wet bar, fireplace, tiny patio, tiny deck. Everything a young single could want and I furnished it completely modern.

Now I've gone to quality. Simple, cozy, comfy lodge/cabin styling. I just got done with a makeover of the master bedroom. Next, dunno.

I don't buy 'decor' just to have it. VPH, JS, do nothing for me.

I was looking at high end homes for sale on Zillow. No kitsch, nothing cutsey or whimsical about them at all. Neutral decor, high end furnishings and simple.

Re: Has your home decor preferences changed drastically overtime?

We keep our furniture as long as it's in good shape. (Living room-third set in almost 40 years, bedroom- original). I recently changed the lamps and interior doors, and I love the updated feel. We often rotate the smaller pieces from room to room. The last few years I'm in a de-cluttering/minimalist stage of my life, and I have purged/re-purposed some of our things. The furniture that was made by my husband will be with me, and cherished always. Our style always was, and still is casual/rustic/country/arts & crafts/with a little shabby-chic ish on the side.

Re: Has your home decor preferences changed drastically overtime?

My style is VALERIE PARR HILL---mixture of traditional/shabby chic/cottage/french country---mostly I stick with traditional style for furniture-couch, chairs, end tables and coffee table and have an antique curio cabinet and bookcase, and an amoire that is more french country, my dinning room is traditional...and bedroom furniture cottage/shabby chic. I love to change out my accessories and home decor for different seasons/holidays---much cheaper than buying new furniture. And some of the decor items that are NOT sentimental I change out, those that I may tire of I give away, but I am usually on the look out when I browse whether online or in local stores.....

Re: Has your home decor preferences changed drastically overtime?

I'm 54, I've matured and changed overtime. I would hope my decorating style has changed. My own mother wasn't typical, she liked change and totally redecorate every ten years or so. I inherited that from her. I went from liking a clean modern decor as young wife and mom living in a small suburban starter home to living all things colonial and early American when we moved into a large colonial home. I bought the magazine's, went to home shows, I wanted the total look. Then, as I got older, I wasn't as interested in everything in my home "coordinating". I didn't want a home that looked like the display rooms of a furniture. I wanted less "stuff" in my rooms, more light and more color. We redecorate and I bought things we liked, I called it "eclectic". Looking back now, it was more mish-mash. Every room was nicely furnished and decorated but there was no cohesiveness. And the girls completed college and moved out and we wanted a smaller, spanking brand new home. We downsized into a new condo and our old "family" decor wouldn't have worked in the new place. My love affair with color was over. The rooms were smaller and I wanted space and light. So, we bought all new, everything. Now it's minimalist with white walls, tans and ivory and beige with just touches of plum like color, here and there. Lots of glass and metal. And there's the humongous tv in the living room that I would never have put there in the old days. So, I guess I've come full circle and back to modern decor. But this time, everything's classier and much more expensive. I'm sure this isn't the end, I'm just in my early 50's. There's many years left, my taste will change and I'll redo the house again.

Re: Has your home decor preferences changed drastically overtime?

I've done a complete 180 on my taste in decor since I was young!

As a newly married young woman, my DH and I liked what was then called "Danish Modern". That was our living and dining room. We only had a 1-bedroom apt at the time and purchased a Broyhill Solid Walnut 4-piece bedroom set, kind of modern looking. The marriage didn't last, but the Broyhill did! {#emotions_dlg.thumbup1} I just gave it to my son a couple of years ago - he looked it up on eBay, and it's worth a small fortune now compared to what we paid for it then (even considering all these years of inflation). They just don't make furniture now the way they used to.

Over the years, I graduated to more "traditional" decor, but for the last 10-15 years, I've been gradually changing over to antique furniture pieces that I've discovered at antique shows, flea markets, etc. I'm incorporating those into a cottage/slightly shabby chic look, with collections of quilts, chintz china, tole trays, and other smaller decor pieces that I love, including watercolor paintings of geraniums. I've collected magazines and am trying to duplicate some of the things that I see in those - I love this look...it's so comfortable and cozy, nothing fancy whatever. And it makes me happy!{#emotions_dlg.laugh}

Re: Has your home decor preferences changed drastically overtime?

I come from a family that uses things until they can't be used anymore, then replaces things. My mom has a Chromecraft dining room table and chairs. Chromecraft has gone out of business, but my mom looked at new dining sets, did not like what she saw, and is now looking for an upholsterer to re-do the dining room chairs. I grew up with Early American furnishings, but I like some modern things, too. The colors I like have changed- I used to not like yellow, but I like touches of yellow in a kitchen. I don't have the disposable income to keep changing furnishings- I have had the same pictures on the wall for 20+ years and it does not bother me a bit. I add things here and there. I use things past their usefullness. The button on my KA toaster busted, I ordered a replacement, and I could not get the button on, so I use a butter knife to pull the lever down - the toaster was over $100.00, and works fine, so I'll use the butter knife until the toaster conks out. When I got married, I liked to collect things with moose on them. I got a gift of dinnerware with moose on it that I had passed on when I saw it. I decided then that collections- moose, geese, hummels, dolls, ect- was not my style. I used to like plaid furnishings, but now see how versitle solids are, even when the furnishings may be older.

Re: Has your home decor preferences changed drastically overtime?

We purchased our couch and chairs 20 yrs ago, they were investment pieces and look like new still. Before we purchased them, our couches were hand-me-downs or used. We bought our bed in 1977. Our kitchen table is a garage sale purchase for $10, but it's solid teak and handmade tiles. All the other wood pieces in our house are either family heirlooms or antiques we purchased at least 10 yrs ago. We are going to do a partial remodel on our main bathroom so I'm looking for an antique buffet for the sink base.

OP, you asked the question, what about you?

Re: Has your home decor preferences changed drastically overtime?

I moved 8 years ago to a new house. It didn't take long to decide my old stuff wouldn't fit in the new house. I was a lot bit country. I didn't know where to start, it was all overwhelming. I did nothing for the first year other than put up blinds in the bath and bedroom.

My neighbor was a house stagger. I'd go over her house and mentally record everything. A couple times a week I went to home goods, pier 1, pottery barn, etc looking to copy her style. Eventually things started to click and I finally had my own style. It looks like a model home. The valerie, HR, etc things are what add the warmth.

Re: Has your home decor preferences changed drastically overtime?

My tastes are similar to mine in the past. Never had hand-me-down items, but do have items from original apartment living. I think I want less clutter now; when did last painting I put up less wall décor.
