So far mine is holding up well by just hooking the garland straight to the hooks . I think I used 6 hooks total. I use Command hooks, too. Just be super careful when you remove the hooks. Hold the hook in place as you pull the sticky tab our parallel to the surface. Don't lift up on the tab as you pull because you can pull the paint off. I learned from experience...
