What a mess. The couple knew they were breaking HOA rules with the yard sign, but insisted on their "free speech right" to do it anyway - and were angered over the resultant fine.
Then the HOA may have "retaliated" when they disapproved the couple's request to build a deck.
So the couple sued, won and bankrupted the HOA - raising the dues from $650 to $3500 and really hurting elderly and other homeowners - not to mention forcing the sale of the common area to pay the legal bills.
